Aquatics & Safety - Swim Instructor

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The part-time Swim Instructor is responsible for maintaining constant supervision of students to ensure safety. Creating positive, nurturing relationships with students and builds cooperative relationships with parents and caregivers. Promoting and supporting the potential of all students in program.

Facilitating peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall program experience.

Essential functions include providing swimming and water safety instruction to students of all ages and abilities, planning and implementing program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values, helping to create new approaches to serve the needs of program participants, adhering to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards, and ensuring consistency with evidence-based practices. The Swim Instructor also maintains constant supervision of students, identifies students who need assistance, and supports students as necessary to ensure a positive learning environment.

Additionally, they attend staff meetings and trainings, follow YMCA policies and procedures, maintain positive relationships with parents and caregivers and other staff, and train and supervise class aides as assigned.

YMCA leadership competencies include mission advancement, collaboration, operational effectiveness, and personal growth. Qualifications, knowledge, skills, and abilities include a minimum age of 16, basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration certifications and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date, YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent or ability to get certification, demonstrated ability to recognize students who may need assistance, demonstrated ability to recognize and remedy hazardous and dangerous situations, demonstrated ability to swim in shallow and deep water and tread water, patience and the ability to communicate with all ages and levels of students, parents and caregivers, and other Y staff and volunteers.

Work schedules may vary per the Y's hours of operation. Most Y's are open 7 days a week:
Mon. – Fri. 5:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Sat. 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Sun. 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Work environment and physical demands include lifting equipment and a small – to average – size child, remaining in the pool area at all times, remaining alert, with no lapses of consciousness, in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80 degrees or higher, recognizing distress signals, supporting child or adult body weight in the water, ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time, ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time, remaining in water ranging from 80-90 degrees for one to four hours, communicating verbally, including projecting voice across distance, in normal and loud situations, and ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
