Position Overview
This position serves as the Technician Inspection Specialist on the District Bridge Inspection team which makes detailed inspections of bridges and structures throughout the district. These duties are necessary to fulfill the requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS), compile information needed to program necessary repairs, and most importantly, ensure public safety.
Essential Functions
* Directs and supervises, on a day-to-day basis, the bridge inspection team in the continuing detailed field inspection of bridges and structures throughout the district to ensure compliance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards.
* Conducts field inspections involving fracture critical structures, pin and link assemblies, underwater bridge inspection and scour analysis to meet the requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards.
* Conducts visual inspection of bridges to seek out damaged or deteriorated components, providing records and photographs of deficiencies detected and makes appropriate recommendations for repair or further structural analysis. Surveys include precise measurements and elevations of bridge components and stream or riverbed profiles and cross-sections.
* Prepares bridge inspection forms and reports under the direction of the Bridge Engineer Inspection Specialist. Enters inspection data, requests reports, and analyzes information from the Bridge Inspection System.
* Operates and maintains a variety of expensive and sophisticated equipment used by the team.
* Establishes proper traffic protection in accordance with departmental standards.
* Performs calculations in conjunction with the inspection and reports.
* Prepares and/or assists in development of plans for the annual bridge construction program, contract maintenance program, and Day Labor program.
* Monitors the required inspection frequencies for the various types of inspections required for each structure to prevent National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) delinquencies.
* Performs all duties in manner conducive with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
* Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience OR seven years of engineering experience in the area of bridge maintenance and inspection.
* National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) Team Leader Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
* Ability to interpret and implement departmental policies
* Strong oral and/or written communication skills.
Conditions of Employment
* Ability to climb and inspect various types of bridges at various heights.
* Valid driver's license.
* District-wide travel and state-wide travel with overnight stays.
* Overtime.
* Successful completion of a background check.
