Position Overview

This position is accountable for planning and directing the activities of the Physical Tests Unit to ensure aggregates, manufactured products, reinforcement, pre-cast concrete products, pipe, structural fasteners, pavement marking products, bridge paint, and other materials are acceptable for use in roadway and structure construction and maintenance on both state and local systems.

Essential Functions

* Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the Physical Tests Unit.

* Establishes and supervises the implementation of the district standard of practice relating to material production inspection, manufactured product inspection, material usage, and material acceptance documentation review and validation.

* Provides technical expertise and conducts research relating to manufactured products including their specifications, appropriate use, and acceptance.

* Reviews plans, specifications, and special provisions, and makes recommendations prior to letting.

* Ensures substantial compliance with department policies and specifications relating to aggregates and manufactured products.

* Provides timely and practical solutions to aggregate and manufactured product problems encountered during the construction and maintenance of roadways and structures.

* Assigns, trains, motivates, and evaluates staff.

* Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

* Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.

* Five years of experience in civil engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

* Supervisory experience.

* Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering.

* Extensive knowledge of manufactured products and aggregates.

* Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with departmental staff.

* Good oral and written communication skills.

Conditions of Employment

* Occasional district wide travel with overnight stays.

* Valid driver's license.
