Job Description
Perform special duties as assigned. Review submitted design plans to check for compliance with AASHTO, PROWAG, and VDOT standards and policy. Provide engineering support and consultation related to the engineering program area. Effectively manage assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion. Communicate with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, citizens, and FHWA regarding roadway design concepts.
How You Will Contribute- CADD and Computer
Skills:
Complete roadway design tasks in Open Roads, Auto Turn, and other non‑CADD applications such as Microsoft Excel and Access. Recognize and analyze significant problems and develop and recommend solutions. - Collaboration:
Host and attend meetings using collaborative software such as Microsoft Teams. - Perform duties as assigned:
Perform duties, tasks, activities and/or projects as assigned. - Project Engineering:
Assist in the management of projects and tasks including development of and managing the scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reports. Complete multiple concurrent tasks and assignments, and report updates on their status. - Roadway Design:
Develop and review sub‑components and complete roadway designs for a wide range of transportation projects. Suggest appropriate measures to resolve problems related to project design. Provide technical direction and support in the application of VDOT's standards, specifications, policies, and procedures in the development of transportation projects. Ensure deliverables are accurate and correct in content.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences.
- Ability to plan and schedule work.
- Knowledge of principles of roadway safety that impact roadway standards and special designs.
- Skill in delivering exemplary customer service.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering and design software.
- Ability to apply civil engineering principles as they relate to roadway design and standard design technical knowledge.
- Ability to listen and have positive relationships with external stakeholders.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment and manage multiple plan review assignments.
- Knowledge of roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications, and materials.
- Skill in applying design standards, specifications, policies, and procedures.
- A combination of training, experience, or education in engineering, or related field desired.
- Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license desired.
- Knowledge of roadway design and project management for transportation projects.
