Position Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced, hands‑on Director of Accounting to lead the organization's accounting and financial operations.

This position requires more than traditional nonprofit accounting experience. The successful candidate will bring a strong understanding of real estate, construction accounting, job costing, fund accounting, and GAAP
, along with the ability to manage the general ledger and ensure the accuracy and integrity of the organization's financial statements.

The Director of Accounting will oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, audits, internal controls, property and construction‑related accounting, and a small accounting team. This individual will also serve as a key financial partner to the Executive Director, Board, and senior leadership team.

Key Projects
  • Supporting and helping lead an accounting/software conversion currently in process
  • Preparing the organization for its upcoming audit
  • Reviewing and strengthening general ledger accuracy and account reconciliation processes
  • Improving accounting procedures, controls, reporting, and financial processes
  • Supporting accurate accounting for construction, development, property, and project‑related activity
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the organization's accounting and financial operations in accordance with GAAP
  • Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the general ledger, ensuring transactions are properly recorded, reconciled, and reflected in accurate financial statements
  • Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reporting
  • Oversee fund accounting, including appropriate tracking and reporting of restricted and unrestricted activity
  • Manage accounting related to real estate, construction projects, development activity, and property operations
  • Oversee construction and job costing, including project budgets, costs, commitments, allocations, and budget‑to‑actual reporting
  • Lead month‑end and year‑end close processes
  • Oversee account reconciliations, bank reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules
  • Coordinate and support the organization's annual financial audit
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, procedures, and documentation
  • Manage financial compliance related to funding agreements, loans, bank covenants, affordability requirements, and other regulatory obligations
  • Maintain financial documentation associated with properties, funding agreements, lending arrangements, and compliance requirements
  • Identify accounting and financial risks and recommend process, system, and control improvements
  • Supervise and develop the Accounting Manager and support a small accounting team
