POSITION SUMMARY
Outreach Educators take learning beyond Zoo grounds—bringing live animals, conservation stories, and hands-on learning directly into the community. This role is perfect for an adaptable, confident educator who enjoys daily/local travel, variety, and making meaningful connections with people. Outreach Educators lead ZOO Mobile outreach programs at schools, community organizations, senior communities, birthday parties, and special events. Through engaging animal presentations and interactive activities, Outreach Educators inspire curiosity, compassion for wildlife, and a deeper understanding of the natural world among audiences of all ages.
This part-time, non-supervisory role requires strong independent work skills, weekday and weekend availability, and a commitment to representing the Zoo professionally in offsite settings. Outreach Educators play a vital role in expanding the Zoo’s educational impact and strengthening community connections.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Transport animals and program materials safely to outreach locations
- Deliver engaging, age-appropriate presentations to diverse audiences
- Adapt programs for varying group sizes and environments
- Ensure animal welfare, participant safety, and positive guest interactions
- Promote teamwork and collaboration within the Education department
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Must be at least 21 years of age to be insured as a zoo driver
- Energetic and expressive educator who creates memorable, interactive experiences
- Ability to work weekends and weekdays and travel to offsite locations
- Experience working with children, including toddlers
- Experience working with diverse audiences and varying group sizes
- Coursework or experience in environmental education, biology, or a related field required
- Willingness to learn to appropriately handle and work with a variety of animals (including reptiles and invertebrates)
INDEPENDENT ACTION
Must be a self-starter with strong initiative, excellent time management skills, and the ability to work independently while representing the Zoo in community settings. Must be able to multitask in a fast-paced environment, and work effectively with limited supervision.
Experience Required- Experience working with children, including toddlers
- Experience working with diverse audiences and varying group sizes
- Coursework or experience in environmental education, biology, or a related field required
- Willingness to learn to appropriately handle and work with a variety of animals (including reptiles and invertebrates)
- Current CPR/First Aid Certification
