Job Summary

CSDB is accepting applications for current and future vacancies for Teacher of the Deaf. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis for vacancies in all instructional areas, including but not limited to elementary education, early childhood education, English/Language Arts, science, mathematics, and social studies.

This position reports to the Principal of the School for the Deaf and is responsible for providing standards-based instruction and support to K‑12 learners who are Deaf/hard of hearing and who may have additional needs. It utilizes Colorado Academic Standards and benchmarks to establish instructional goals and provides assessments that monitor learner progress in a safe and civil school environment.

• Prepare lesson plans and develop input for and present daily instructional/learning activities based on the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and school reform tenets under the direction of the Principal; maintain a positive learning environment using appropriate positive behavior support strategies; keep learners on task and engaged.
• Demonstrate knowledge and skill in developing and using accommodations for Deaf/hard‑of‑hearing learners, including task analysis, assessment, progress monitoring, behavior management, organization/planning, curriculum development, current technology practices, parent relations, and teamwork.
• Utilize technology to model, teach, and assist learners in instruction and activities.
• Demonstrate knowledge and skill in project and technology‑based learning.
• Organize the instructional environment for collaborative group work.
• Work in co‑teaching teams with others.
• Collaborate as part of the education/assessment team responsible for identifying, developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating individual objectives for assigned learners.
• Use appropriate communication skills with a commitment to literacy development for each learner.
• Support learners’ social‑emotional development.
• Advocate for assigned learners.
• Coordinate with other staff to facilitate instruction, support school reform efforts, strategic planning, and co‑curricular activities.
• Participate in school meetings, departmental meetings, and instructional meetings as required.
• Provide parent consultation and participate in selected parent‑focused activities.
• Seek opportunities for and participate in professional development, training, and workshops as appropriate.
• Perform other appropriate duties as assigned.

• Master’s Degree in Education or a closely related field from a regionally accredited college or university, with specialization in Deaf Education.
• Must hold or be eligible for appropriate educator licensure in the State of Colorado, endorsed as a Special Education Specialist:
  Deaf/Hard‑of‑Hearing, or a comparable endorsement.
• Subject area endorsement or specialization.
• Experience teaching or working with children (in an educational environment) who are Deaf/hard‑of‑hearing, or who may have multiple disabilities.
• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Advanced (3+) skill level as demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool and in accordance with school policy/procedures.

• Knowledge and skill in best practices for providing developmentally appropriate instruction to learners.
• Knowledge of, and ability to apply, current standards‑based educational practices for Deaf/hard‑of‑hearing learners.
• Knowledge of and ability to assess and apply technology to meet the requirements of the position; ability to use a variety of computer software applications, including e‑mail, Internet, word processing, electronic calendar, presentation development, spreadsheet, database, and learning management systems.
• Ability to adapt teaching skills, learning environment management, and lesson preparation to a technology‑rich environment, including on‑site classroom, telepresence, and distance education technologies.
• Knowledge of literacy development, instruction, and intervention for learners in ASL and English.
