The City of Colorado Springs is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Engineer III to join the design team within our Stormwater Enterprise. This role will focus primarily on stormwater design duties including leading design tasks for internal projects, assisting with updates to the Colorado Springs Drainage criteria manual, and reviewing and approving drainage reports and construction plans to ensure compliance with City codes, policies, and standards.
Key Responsibilities- Serve as Design Lead:
Lead design tasks for stormwater projects, ensuring all designs meet City codes, policies, standards, and drainage criteria and provide mentorship and training for junior engineers on stormwater design plan production. - Technical Expertise:
Assist with updates to the Colorado Springs Drainage Criteria Manual, creation and testing of design tools, and other stormwater studies within Colorado Springs. - Plan Review and Approval:
Review and approve a variety of engineering design reports and construction drawings, including drainage reports, storm sewer plans, erosion control plans, and permanent stormwater quality control measures, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations. - Stakeholder Interaction:
Respond to inquiries from other City departments, the public, contractors, and developers regarding stormwater design and compliance issues. - Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure project compliance with federal, state, and local regulations during the review and implementation of stormwater capital projects. - Other duties as assigned.
- Methods and techniques of engineering plan design, review, and approval
- Professional civil engineering principles, practices, and methods—specifically those related to stormwater management, hydrology, and hydraulics
- Pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations
- Concepts related to City's Four Step Process, full-spectrum detention, and low-impact development
- Erosion control and sediment control measures
- Project management principles
Ability to:
- Provide technical training and supervision to lower-level engineering staff
- Communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or related engineering field
- Five years of full‑time professional engineering experience in an area related to assignment.
- Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid, non‑probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges.
- Possess upon hire a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Colorado (or obtain Colorado licensure by reciprocity within six months of hire if holding an out‑of‑state license).
The bachelor’s degree requirement will be waived if PE (Professional Engineer) License has been obtained via C.R.S. 12‑25‑114(1)(a).
Preferred Qualifications- A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or related engineering field
- Experience with the following programs:
- HEC‑HMS
- HEC‑RAS
- EPA SWMM
- UD‑SEWER
- StormCAD
- AutoCAD
- GIS
- Stormwater design experience
- Familiarity with plan production
- Experience with drainage criteria application
