The SARA, Inc. High Power Electromagnetics Division (HPEM) is looking for a talented, motivated, and imaginative Mechanical Technician to support research and development activities and transition innovative technologies to the DoD, DoE, and their contractors in Colorado Springs, CO. The candidate will have the opportunity to grow and learn with talented engineers, physicists, and technicians on long-standing programs and new programs supporting our customers.
Our small group will allow the candidate to experience, contribute, and collaborate in a multidisciplinary nature from conception all the way through to operation.
The Mechanical Technician plays a critical role in the rapid development, fabrication, and testing of mechanical and electromechanical systems. This is a highly hands‑on position involving welding, carpentry, machining, and mechanical assembly to support prototype builds and system integration efforts. The role requires strong ownership, a sense of urgency, and the ability to execute efficiently in a dynamic R&D environment where priorities shift and timelines are tight.
The ideal candidate is proactive, resourceful, and driven to see tasks through to completion with a high level of quality and accountability.
Core Responsibilities:
- Build, fabricate, and integrate mechanical and electromechanical systems and prototypes using a variety of methods including welding, machining, carpentry, and mechanical assembly
- Perform testing, troubleshooting, and modification of systems using standard diagnostic and measurement tools
- Interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications to support fabrication, assembly, and issue resolution
- Assist engineers in preparing, executing, and documenting mechanical, environmental, and functional tests
- Document build processes, procedures, configurations, and test results to support prototype and production efforts
- Support installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of systems in both laboratory and field environments
- Take ownership of assigned tasks and deliverables, proactively driving work to completion with a strong sense of urgency in support of project schedules
- Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and external vendors to meet technical objectives and deadlines
- Prepare materials and components for fabrication processes, including surface coatings and finishes
- Assist with inventory organization, material handling, and assembly of build kits
- Assist with running environmental test equipment, and recording data as directed by the test engineer
- Follow work instructions and quality procedures with accurate record keeping and attention to detail
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace in lab, shop, and field environments
- Perform other duties, assignments, and responsibilities as reasonably assigned by management in support of departmental, programmatic, and organizational objectives
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 2 – 4 years of hands‑on experience in mechanical or electromechanical assembly, fabrication, and testing in a lab or field environment
- Experience with fabrication methods including machining (mills, lathes), welding, carpentry, and mechanical assembly
- Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical systems with basic electrical/electronic understanding
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively
