Environmental Coordinator (Industrial Pretreatment)

Colorado Springs Utilities' Industrial Pretreatment (IPT) section is seeking an Environmental Coordinator knowledgeable in compliance programs related to wastewater regulations. You will have the opportunity to be directly involved with industrial user permitting, sampling, coordination, oversight of connector districts, identifying industrial users and evaluating surveys, and various other tasks pertaining to the industrial pretreatment program.

As an Environmental Coordinator, you will use your technical skills and environmental knowledge in support of clean water for Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas. You will have the opportunity to work closely with business owners and customers of Colorado Springs Utilities to achieve the goal of compliance with wastewater regulations.

A day in the life of an Environmental Coordinator may include:

  • Performing industrial permitting activities, permit issuance and management, facility inspections, reporting, and sampling
  • Prepares detailed inspection reports of commercial facilities, which include compiling findings, issuing required action to the facility, and tracking user deadlines
  • Performs complex investigative fieldwork, evaluating waste of non-domestic users, including compliance sampling. Verifies information provided by industrial users
  • Recommends and completes program compliance enforcement under the direction of the supervisor
  • Provides outreach and technical support to industrial customers
  • Administers sector control programs and procedures to ensure environmental compliance and stewardship
  • Manages and prepares contractual agreements with connector districts, including collecting and reviewing compliance documents
  • Prepares program modification notifications to state and federal regulatory agencies
  • Responsible for identifying new and existing industrial dischargers and characterizing these facilities
  • Maintains thorough documentation of communications and interactions with external customers
  • Managing files and evaluating environmental records to ensure compliance with permit and regulatory requirements
  • Complying with record management requirements, including management of confidential information
  • Staying informed of applicable local, state, and federal regulations and guidance regarding industrial waste discharges as well as monitoring and reporting requirements
  • Reviewing and evaluating requests for discharging various types of waste to the sanitary sewer system

Who You Are

  • Relevant experience (i.e., typically 2 years of progressively responsible experience) in an environmental compliance and/or regulatory capacity
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or a related field is valued
  • Experience in industrial pretreatment, wastewater compliance, wastewater treatment, and/or industrial hygiene is valued
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes as sources of industrial waste and/or wastewater treatment is valued
  • Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver's license is required
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
  • This job requires acute attention to detail and substantial reading and comprehension skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light work.
  • Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises.
