Senior Technical Writer

CGI Federal is seeking a Senior Technical Writer to lead the development, organization, and editing of technical documentation supporting a Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) program for the U.S. Army. The role produces high‑quality, accurate, and clear content that adheres to Defense standards, program requirements, and user needs.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, organize, and edit technical documentation for the NGC2 program.
  • Collaborate with engineers, subject‑matter experts, vendors, and government stakeholders to translate complex technical material into clear, user‑friendly content.
  • Create and maintain manuals, guides, procedures, and reports.
  • Edit and standardize documentation for clarity, conciseness, terminology, and style.
  • Maintain consistent formatting and terminology across all documentation.
  • Integrate visual materials such as photographs, drawings, diagrams, and simple sketches to support technical processes.
  • Assist teams in preparing materials for publication, briefings, and technical presentations.
  • Maintain records, files, revision histories, and version control of all documentation.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks to ensure technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with DoD requirements.
  • Participate in quality review cycles and coordinate document approvals.
Required Qualifications
  • Education:

    MA, MS, or MBA in Technical Writing, English, Journalism, Creative Writing, or related field; BA/BS + 2 additional years of experience or 5 additional years of technical writing experience may substitute.
  • 10+ years of experience as a technical writer in a DoD environment.
  • Experience developing technical manuals, engineering documentation, procedural guides, and system descriptions.
  • Experience collaborating with engineering, logistics, and program teams to produce accurate technical content.
  • Strong writing, editing, and document structuring capabilities.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and engineering data.
  • Experience with publishing tools, formatting standards, and document management systems.
  • Familiarity with Defense documentation standards and quality requirements.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and version control; ability to translate complex material into clear language.
  • Strong communication skills; ability to work with diverse technical teams and manage multiple documents and deadlines simultaneously.
Desired Qualifications (Non‑essential)
  • Experience in graphics development, illustration, or technical art.
  • Familiarity with XML‑based technical publishing or S1000D.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS) or document automation tools.
  • Technical writing or editing certifications (STC, CPTC, etc.).
  • DoD or DAU documentation related coursework.
  • Ability to develop templates, style guides, and writing standards.
  • Experience in UI/UX writing for software or user‑facing applications.
  • Experience reviewing, improving, and modernizing legacy documentation.
