Principal Technical Writer Job Description
Join a global leader in aerospace and defense technology and contribute to revolutionary systems that shape national security and space exploration. As a Principal Technical Writer, you will be part of the Regional Apps Agile Release Train, responsible for producing documentation that effectively communicates the technical details of Regional software. This role involves collaboration with leadership and product teams to deliver documentation that meets customer and program requirements.
Responsibilities- Create and maintain Regional Apps technical documentation in accordance with industry and Department of Defense (DoD) standards.
- Lead the creation, updating, and delivery of Algorithm Design Documentation (ADD),
Functional Area
Design Documentation (FADDs), and other program plans, procedures, and processes. - Track documentation due dates, build completion plans, collate inputs from product teams into draft and final versions, and report progress, risks, and dependencies to leadership.
- Collaborate with engineers, leadership, and stakeholders to gather feedback and incorporate it into final documentation.
- Research existing documentation and development projects as source material for new or updated content.
- Maintain information repositories including Confluence, Jira, and SharePoint.
- Track and meet scheduled deadlines for all documentation deliverables.
- Proficiency in technical writing and editing, with experience in creating and refining documentation to meet DoD standards.
- Expertise in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint and Visio, for creating presentations and diagrams.
- Current, active in-scope DoD‑issued Secret clearance is mandatory.
- Experience with Confluence, Jira, SharePoint, and markdowns.
- Strong organizational and presentation skills.
- Excellent writing and presentation skills; effective communicator across various audiences.
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently on large projects.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, Communications, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field, plus 5 years of experience; OR a Master's degree plus 3 years of experience; OR 9 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
- Experience with Git and Nexus.
- Understanding of DoD documentation standards.
- Prior experience with documentation‑generation on a large‑scale DoD program.
- Experience with markdown for documentation as code.
This position is based on-site in Colorado Springs, CO or Huntsville, AL, with no remote work or relocation assistance provided. Expect approximately 10% travel for business needs. The role offers the opportunity to work alongside skilled and diverse engineering teams on a high‑visibility DoD program, contributing to national missile defense capability.
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Colorado Springs, CO.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $90000.00 - $135000.00/hr.
