Position: Registered Nurse I - CMHHIP

Registered Nurse I – Full Time

Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP) is seeking a full‑time Registered Nurse I for multiple units. The position requires a 100% in‑person schedule. Shift options:
Day 6:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. or Night 6:30 p.m. – 7 a.m.

About the Position

Responsible for nursing oversight and direction of nursing personnel on the assigned shift and unit, supporting patient care for a diverse patient population including adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. Provide clinical leadership, crisis intervention, and ensure compliance with CMHHIP policies, licensure, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct all nursing staff on the assigned shift and unit.
  • Coordinate staffing and ensure appropriate licensed personnel are available.
  • Serve as charge nurse, managing incidents, injuries, and safety concerns.
  • Conduct direct patient care, including assessments, interventions, and documentation.
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment across multiple security levels.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team, lead meetings, and report to the Lead Nurse.
  • Implement and monitor quality improvement activities, incident reporting, and compliance with state and national standards.
Clinical Direction
  • Collaborate with the Lead Nurse to design staffing plans and manage acuity.
  • Ensure nursing assignments align with patient acuity and institutional policies.
  • Subscribe to cornerstones, meetings and email communications to keep staff informed.
  • Provide regular individual clinical supervision and mentoring.
  • Act as the charge nurse for the shift and report any injury or safety concern promptly.
  • Utilize resources in the Staffing Office as needed.
Department Standards
  • Maintain nursing care standards and compliance with CMHHIP policies.
  • Stay current on new policies, standards and best practices.
  • Coordinate with other departments and provide assistance as required.
  • Ensure accurate staffing and schedule compliance.
Staff Development & Competencies
  • Mentor, train and provide feedback to nursing staff.
  • Ensure staff proficiency with electronic systems and mandatory training.
  • Support staff in completing hospital mandates and mandatory training.
  • Provide educational resources and support to staff for regulatory guidelines.
  • Act as a resource for staff and provide guidance.
Patient Care / Nursing Care
  • Provide high‑quality nursing care and maintain a secure therapeutic environment.
  • Respond promptly to patient psychiatric or medical issues.
  • Ensure proper documentation for seclusion, restraint, and respiratory services.
  • Verify patient identification before medication or procedure.
  • Assess and revise nursing care plans as appropriate.
  • Educate patients and families regarding medications, self‑care and therapeutic needs.
  • Provide coverage and ensure patient safety.
Other Duties
  • Perform any other duties required for the shift, unit or department.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid active Registered Nurse license issued by the State of Colorado.
  • Previous experience in behavioral health or acute care settings is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of nursing process and ability to apply it.
  • Experience with patient care plans and clinical interventions.
  • Ability to oversee shift through training, mentorship and development.
  • Strong work ethic based on self‑motivation, loyalty, honesty and integrity.
  • Dependable, responsible, and adaptable.
  • Experience in a Colorado state health agency.
Essential Attributes
  • Ability to observe and respond to safety and security breaches.
  • Capable of working in situations involving assaultive behavior and restraints.
  • Physical strength to lift at least 50 pounds and perform necessary duties.
Conditions of Employment
  • Full background check (CBI, FBI, Colorado Court database, Medicare Fraud, TRAILS).
  • Direct contact with vulnerable persons requires CAPS check.
  • Physical requirements:

    lift, carry, and use defensive tactics; pass TB screening and influenza vaccination.
