REGISTERED NURSE - GASTROENTEROLOGY

SITE OF SERVICE:
Evans Army Community Hospital (EACH), 1650 Cochrane Cir, CO 80913

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The RN, Gastroenterology (GI) supporting Evans Army Community Hospital provides high-quality care to military beneficiaries in a mission-focused military treatment facility environment. This role supports the health and readiness of active-duty service members, families, and other eligible beneficiaries through direct patient care, clinical coordination, and accurate documentation in the electronic health record.

POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Degree of Nursing/Graduate from a college or university accredited by Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Experience: Two years of nursing experience in an outpatient setting within the past 3 years. Minimum of 1-year bedside hospital experience. Experience performing care and treatment of patients in a gastroenterology setting.

Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse.

Cardiac Certification: BLS and ACLS through American Heart or the American Red Cross.

U.S. Citizenship: Shall be a U.S. citizen

English Language Requirement: Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English well enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers.

Physical Capability: Shall be physically capable of standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time and physically capable of performing all services required under the contract.

DUTIES:
  • Provides direct nursing care to patients undergoing gastroenterology procedures including colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), flexible sigmoidoscopy, and other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Perform pre-procedure nursing assessments including patient history review, medication reconciliation, allergy verification, and readiness assessment.
  • Initiates and maintains intravenous (IV) access and administers medications in accordance with provider orders and facility protocols.
  • Monitors patients receiving moderate/conscious sedation, including cardiac monitoring, respiratory status, oxygen saturation, and hemodynamic stability.
  • Recognizes and responds to adverse events and emergencies in accordance with BLS and ACLS protocols.
  • Provides post-procedure recovery care and patient education for discharge readiness and follow-up care.
  • Collaborates with providers and interdisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care and optimal clinical outcomes.
  • Maintains compliance with infection control standards, safety policies, and DHA and Joint Commission regulatory requirements.
  • Documents all patient care activities accurately and timely within the electronic medical record.
  • Assists with preparation, operation, and maintenance of gastroenterology procedural equipment.
  • Coordinates patient care in collaboration with a wide array of healthcare professionals. Facilitates the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to clinical care, quality and cost effectiveness.
  • Ensures compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the MTF.
  • Performs physical exams and health histories.
  • Provides health promotions, counseling, and education.
  • Administers medications, wound care, and numerous other personalized interventions.
  • Guides and advises care provided by other healthcare professionals.
  • Accountable for making patient care assignments based on the scope of practice and skill level of assigned personnel.
  • Recognizes adverse signs and symptoms and quickly reacts in emergency situations.
  • Makes referral appointments and arranges specialty care as appropriate.
  • Performs nursing services identified in the TO.
  • Conducts research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes.
  • Strongly preferred working knowledge of the military health care system including TRICARE health benefits.
  • Ability to synthesize data from a variety of sources and make appropriate clinical decisions.
  • Coordinates patient care through a continuum and facilitates the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to clinical care, quality and cost effectiveness.
  • Ensures compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
  • Accountable for making patient appointments and follow up.
  • Assesses patient needs telephonically and/or in person.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization. Effectively uses appropriate communication format in addressing professional issues.
