Position: CDOC CORRECTIONAL OFFICER I - Northeastern Region/ Sterling and Limon.

Overview

The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) prison facilities throughout the state. It supports the CDOC mission, vision and values by preparing inmates for community reentry while ensuring professional communication with inmates, their families, coworkers, supervisors and the public.

Responsibilities
  • Work directly with inmates in a locked facility.
  • Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas.
  • Man an armed post (requires annual firearms certification).
  • Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles.
  • Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms.
  • Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule.
  • Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles.
  • Monitor visiting areas.
  • Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts.
  • Cross‑check and maintain movement logs.
  • Conduct searches for contraband (including canine, metal detector, pat‑down, perimeter, strip, and vehicle searches).
  • Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety, and sanitation standards.
  • Inspect inmate mail and property.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as fights, medical emergencies, fires, and escapes.
  • Follow established tool and key control procedures.
  • Attend roll call.
  • Document incidents using established reporting practices.
  • Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or a GED certificate.
Conditions of Employment
  • Applicants must acknowledge and agree to the Conditions of Employment within the application process.
  • Valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application; no H‑1B sponsorship.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess a valid and unrestricted Colorado driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record.
  • No felony convictions, including specified categories under federal statutes.
  • Successful completion of background investigation required.
  • Successful health screening required.
  • Successfully pass all modules of the CDOC Basic Training, including English reading comprehension and defensive tactics.
  • Physical ability to complete defensive tactics and other physical requirements.
  • Willing to work all shifts, doubles, weekends and holidays; must be able to report during inclement weather.
  • Willingness to use physical force and firearms as trained.
  • TB screening required upon hire.

  • Ability to operate outside during inclement weather and adhere to the drug deterrence program.
  • Stress tolerance and mental resilience under pressure.

  • Bilingual.
  • Mentoring experience or volunteer work.
