JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY

The Advocate ensures a safe, supportive school environment by promoting restorative justice practices and responding to safety concerns. This role focuses on repairing harm, fostering accountability, and maintaining order through proactive intervention and relationship-building. Key responsibilities include enforcing laws and district policies, identifying and addressing safety risks, de‑escalating conflicts, and supporting the well-being of all members of the school community.

REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or GED

Certification Requirements

First Aid and CPR certification or commitment to achieve certification within 60 days of hiring.

Crisis Prevention Institutes Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training within 30 days of hiring

Threat Assessment or the ability to complete within 30 days of hire.

Restorative Justice training through Restorative Solutions within 30 days of hire.

Work Experience Required

Two (2) years of experience working with students, and/or two (2) years of experience in military, law enforcement, school security or equivalent experience required. Combination of experience or relevant substitutions may be considered.

Skills and Abilities

Required

Understanding of childhood development and behavior management is preferred.

Basic computer skills preferred.

Strong communication skills, both orally and written.

Ability to follow complex oral and written instruction.

FUNDING

This position is funded through a DOJ Grant for a one-year period beginning with the  school year and employment may be dependent on the successful renewal of funding.

KEY FUNCTIONS, ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain order and discipline while enforcing district policies and state laws.
  • Monitor campus interior and exterior, conduct walk-throughs and patrols, and secure all exterior doors.
  • Identify and address safety risks or hazards proactively; respond promptly to emergencies, violence, or unauthorized visitors.
  • Support security at district-sanctioned events (on/off site, including transportation as needed).
  • Enforce Student Success Matrix, Safe Schools Handbook, and other behavioral policies.

Student Support and Restorative Justice

  • Facilitate restorative practices including circles, mediations, and conferences.
  • Assess cases for restorative suitability and develop action plans for accountability and repair.
  • Educate and train students, staff, and parents on restorative justice principles.
  • Maintain records and reports related to restorative outcomes; collaborate with community and external partners for wraparound support.
  • Serve as a visible, trusted adult on campus, building strong relationships and providing daily support and guidance to students.
  • Refer students and families to appropriate internal and external resources.
  • Respond using CPI-approved de-escalation techniques whenever possible.
  • Conduct student searches and preliminary investigations per district policy and legal standards.
  • Collaborate with school administrators and law enforcement during investigations of safety or policy violations.
  • Support threat assessments and help develop student-specific safety plans.
  • Assist in conducting safety drills (lockdowns, evacuations, shelter-in-place, etc.).
  • Participate in school-level safety planning and analysis of data to inform prevention efforts.
  • Monitor alarms, cameras, and other security systems as needed.
