Our Gas Quality Control and Inspections department is hiring a Natural Gas Pipeline Inspector (G) to support natural gas and joint trench with electric service line installations. Our pipeline inspectors are responsible for inspecting the installation of gas-only, electric-only and or joint trench (gas and electric) service line installations ensuring work performed meets compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and safety procedures about the natural gas and electric industries, as published in both the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 192 and in both the Colorado Springs Utilities Natural Gas Line Extension and Service Standards (GLESS) and Electric Line Extension and Service Standards manuals (ELESS).

This is an intermediate-level position that requires technical knowledge of the operational functionality of natural gas and electric line systems and meter placement standards. If you have completed a gas pipefitter apprenticeship and/or have demonstrated experience installing gas and electric service lines or closely related infrastructure, we want to hear from you!

A day in the life of a Natural Gas Pipeline Inspector may include:
  • Conducting onsite inspections, including final inspections for both natural gas service lines and electric service lines, or in a joint trench application
  • Overseeing and validating the testing of natural gas service line systems. Performs gas pipeline pressure tests, reviews, and interprets results
  • Providing solutions to ensure compliance with required standards, specifications, and codes as identified by organizational Gas Line Extension and Service Standards (GLESS/ELESS) and those established in Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)192
  • Assisting in developing and maintaining construction and design standards
  • Safe handling of gas and electric service lines
  • Locating natural gas service lines
  • Reading and complying with blueprints and specifications for projects
  • Inspects project layouts, pipe joining methods, and installation of electric service lines and polyethylene natural gas service lines
  • Ensuring contractor construction materials and excavations meet specifications
  • Ensuring contractors are current in their Operator Qualifications for the tasks being performed
  • Maintaining and coordinating the calibrations of inspection equipment
  • Wrapping damaged and exposed natural gas pipelines and dispatching personnel for the repair of severe damage

This position is subject to performing work in all types of weather conditions. You may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.

Who You Are:
  • Completion of a Gas Pipefitter Apprentice program (DOL or NDOL) and/or demonstrated experience installing and/or repairing gas mains and service lines, or 3-5 years of relevant utility-related experience
  • Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver's license
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required Operator Qualifications (OQ) per the Colorado Springs Utilities OQ document, and complete additional relevant training
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS /

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Exerts 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or 10-25 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
  • Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
