Social Emotional Wellness Specialist

Work Day Calendar Hourly Pay Rate: $27.27+ (Salary placement is based on experience.)

Job Summary:

The Social Emotional Wellness Specialist (SEWS) works with students who need support with social emotional, behavioral, and other health needs under the direction and guidance of special education teachers and in collaboration with school social workers and school nurses. The Social Emotional Wellness Specialist incorporates intervention strategies that teach students more appropriate ways to deal with their behaviors and decision-making processes while supporting the implementation of behavior intervention plans through safety monitoring.

These strategies include increased self-control, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), restorative practices, problem-solving skills and replacement behavior supports. The SEWS helps students, their families and the educational system overcome health problems that impede learning. They assist in the provision of services for special education students through direct service to support behavior, monitoring for safety, consultation and liaison with school, home, and community.

They help students resolve personal, emotional, and social problems that interfere with their adjustment to school and their capacity to enjoy the fullest benefits of the education offered them.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of a special education teacher and in consultation with a school social worker provide behavioral intervention to students in accordance with their IEPs to monitor for safety and correct those personal, social, or emotional maladjustments related to their health and social progress. Lead and work with students in activities to promote their physical, mental, and social development and their school readiness.

Monitor for and prevent negative behavior using redirection or other positive strategies. Check in with students during lunch and other unstructured times throughout the day. Serve as a liaison between the school and community agencies to secure the best possible services for students and for those parents who request such assistance. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Training and

Experience:

Two years' experience working with school-aged students. Academic experience in mental health, crisis management, and or family systems of support. Associate degree or higher in mental health, crisis management, and or family systems of support preferred. Oral communication, and strong interpersonal skills. Basic math, writing, and academic skills. Ability to work with students with various backgrounds and abilities. Operating knowledge of personal computers, Microsoft Word, telephones, and printer preferred lity to promote and follow Board of Education Coherent Governance Policies, District Policies and building and department procedures.

Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds. Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator. Criminal background check and District fingerprinting required.
