BMC Software Engineer (E4)
This role focuses on full-cycle software engineering for the Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2
BMC) system in a secure defense environment. You will design, develop, integrate, and support software capabilities, applying object-oriented programming principles and basic systems engineering concepts to deliver reliable, testable, and maintainable solutions. The position requires strong technical skills, disciplined development practices, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, mission-critical setting with evolving requirements.
- Design, develop, and implement new software capabilities across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis through deployment and sustainment.
- Apply basic systems engineering principles to drive software architecture and design decisions that align with overall system requirements.
- Develop software using Java or another object-oriented programming language, following established design principles and patterns.
- Implement and maintain object-oriented designs that are modular, extensible, and maintainable.
- Manage application deployment, integration, and troubleshooting across Windows and Unix/Linux platforms.
- Configure, maintain, and support software running on both Windows and Unix/Linux operating systems.
- Use tools such as Eclipse IDE, Maven, Git/Git Lab, Python, and Ansible to support build, version control, and configuration management activities.
- Write and maintain Bash scripts to automate build-and-test pipelines and streamline development workflows.
- Develop and execute automated tests using frameworks such as JUnit and Mockito to ensure software quality and reliability.
- Produce repeatable test artifacts, maintain test coverage, and document test procedures and results.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to address rapidly changing requirements and design challenges requiring innovative solutions.
- Troubleshoot complex issues in development, integration, and test environments and implement robust fixes.
- Communicate progress, technical issues, and risks clearly to team members and stakeholders.
- Support event execution, including working outside normal hours when required to meet mission or test milestones.
- Maintain required DoD 8140 IAT Level II (or higher) certification throughout the contract period and adhere to all security and compliance requirements.
- Demonstrated experience in full-cycle software engineering for new capabilities, including design, implementation, testing, and deployment.
- Proficiency in Java or another object-oriented programming language.
- Understanding of object-oriented design principles and patterns and ability to apply them in production-quality software.
- Basic systems engineering understanding to inform software design and integration decisions.
- Experience managing application deployment, integration, and troubleshooting on both Windows and Unix/Linux platforms.
- Hands-on experience working with Windows and Unix/Linux operating systems.
- Experience with tools such as Eclipse IDE, Maven, Git or Git Lab, Python, and Ansible for build, version control, and configuration management.
- Ability to write and maintain Bash scripts for automating build-and-test pipelines.
- Experience with automated testing using frameworks such as JUnit and Mockito.
- Proven ability to produce repeatable test artifacts and maintain appropriate levels of test coverage.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university with 5 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree in a related field with 3 years of relevant experience; or 9 years of relevant work experience in lieu of a degree.
- Current, active DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (such as Security+ CE, CCNA-Security, CySA+, CND, or similar) at the time of application, with a commitment to maintain this certification for the duration of the contract.
- Current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, required to start on Day 1.
- Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time for business needs.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with rapidly changing requirements and tight deadlines.
Skills & Qualifications
- Approximately 5 years of hands-on Java development experience in a secure or defense-related environment.
- Strong command of the Spring framework, including Spring MVC, Spring Data, and Spring Boot.
- Experience working within Linux environments beyond basic usage, including development and troubleshooting.
- Experience with software testing and analysis tools to improve quality, performance, and reliability.
- Knowledge of JavaScript, CSS, and HTML is a plus for user interface or web-related components.
