Yellow Scene Magazine distributes 325,000 magazines throughout Boulder County and the North Metro area, providing one of the most accessible regional news, arts, and entertainment voices. BeatReporters – Boulder County Region
Our beat reporters cover the following areas:
Boulder
, Longmont
, and Broomfield–Louisville–Superior–Lafayette
. We seek dedicated journalists who will spend roughly 25‑30 hours a month researching, building relationships, and illuminating local issues.
- Attend biweekly city council or planning meetings.
- Publish regular dispatches (biweekly to monthly).
- Cover local issues such as housing, affordability, policing, elections, and development.
- Interview local officials, residents, activists, and watchdogs.
- Track long‑term issues and local controversies, providing context and depth.
- Comfortable with interviews, live note‑taking, and local research.
- Clear communicator with a strong grasp of civic systems.
- Passionate about public accountability and equity‑based coverage.
- Willing to travel locally for meetings or in‑person reporting when appropriate.
- $50 for every two public meetings covered (whether or not a story results).
- Per‑story rates include cash plus optional trade, ranging typically from $75 to $175.
- Longer, more intensive stories may pay up to $300+, depending on depth and reporting time.

Journalism InternshipsSix‑month unpaid internships (three‑month accelerated program available for summer students) focused on journalism. Interns will manage the editorial calendar, upload content to our website, write short web pieces, and attend events, with the potential to transition into paid assignments.
Graphics InternshipsInterns receive hands‑on training in agency‑quality editorial layout, design, and copywriting under the Yellow House design team. Compulsory responsibilities include managing project timelines and producing visual content that meets our high standards.
Sales & Marketing InternshipThis unpaid internship offers exposure to the business side of journalism: sales, design, marketing strategies, daily operations, distribution, and social media. Interns will learn to acquire new business and defend democratic principles through journalism.
Distribution DriversMonthly gig delivering 250‑300 magazines to local businesses on a pre‑mapped route across Boulder, Longmont/Erie/Lyons, Lafayette/Louisville, and Broomfield/Westminster/Thornton.
- Pay is $1.15 per stop; first‑time drivers deliver 14‑16 stops per hour.
- Experienced drivers reach 25‑30 stops per hour.
- Estimated delivery time: 15‑18 hours first trip, 10‑12 hours by third trip.
- Pay is by the drop; routes are spot‑checked. Gas reimbursements of $50 per 200 stops.
Summer gig working at area events. Hours depend on event schedule. Responsibilities include promoting our booth, engaging audiences, and supporting our PR efforts.
