High School Percussion Instructor

The High School Percussion Instructor supports the Florence Junior/Senior High School instrumental music program by providing specialized percussion instruction, rehearsal support, student supervision, and performance preparation under the direction of the Band Director.

The Percussion Instructor is responsible for helping student musicians develop appropriate percussion technique, musicianship, rhythm, ensemble skills, performance quality, confidence, discipline, teamwork, responsibility, and pride in their accomplishments.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong percussion knowledge, effective instructional skills, appropriate student-management practices, professionalism, reliability, and the ability to work collaboratively with the Band Director, school employees, students, families, and other members of the music program.

The Percussion Instructor shall serve as an appropriate role model for students and conduct all responsibilities in a manner consistent with Florence Junior/Senior High School and Fremont RE-2 School District policies, expectations, procedures, and applicable law.

Percussion Instruction and Student Development
  • Provide specialized percussion instruction to students participating in the Florence Junior/Senior High School instrumental music program.
  • Teach and reinforce proper percussion fundamentals, techniques, musicianship, rhythm, timing, tone production, articulation, dynamics, posture, instrument care, and performance practices.
  • Provide instruction on applicable percussion instruments, which may include snare drum, bass drum, timpani, mallet percussion, cymbals, auxiliary percussion, drum set, marching percussion, concert percussion, and other percussion instruments utilized by the program.
  • Teach appropriate grip, stroke development, sticking patterns, rudiments, mallet technique, tuning, sound production, coordination, and other percussion-specific skills.
  • Assist students in developing music-reading skills, including rhythmic notation, counting, tempo, meter, dynamics, articulations, musical terminology, and interpretation.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate instruction based on student skill level, experience, assigned repertoire, and program needs.
  • Assist students with individual improvement while supporting the overall musical development and performance goals of the ensemble.
  • Provide constructive, timely, and age-appropriate feedback to students.
  • Differentiate instruction when appropriate to support students with varying levels of percussion experience and ability.
  • Reinforce expectations established by the Band Director regarding musicianship, preparation, attendance, rehearsal etiquette, behavior, performance standards, and program culture.
  • Assist students in developing independence, accountability, confidence, leadership, teamwork, self-discipline, perseverance, and pride in performance.
  • Maintain high expectations while providing a positive, encouraging, respectful, and student-centered instructional environment.
  • Rehearsal and Performance Responsibilities
  • Assist the Band Director with percussion rehearsals, sectionals, full-ensemble rehearsals, performances, and other music-program activities as assigned.
  • Lead percussion sectionals or small-group rehearsals when directed by the Band Director.
  • Prepare students to successfully perform assigned percussion parts.
  • Assist with interpretation and implementation of percussion parts within assigned musical literature.
  • Assist with rehearsal planning and preparation related to percussion needs.
  • Work collaboratively with the Band Director to identify areas requiring additional percussion instruction or rehearsal.
  • Attend rehearsals, performances, concerts, competitions, festivals, athletic events, pep-band events, marching-band activities, parades, community performances, or other program activities when assigned and applicable to the District's music program.
  • Assist in preparing students for concert, marching, pep, festival, competition, honor-band, audition, or other performance opportunities as applicable.
  • Assist with appropriate warm-up routines, technique development, rehearsal procedures, and performance preparation.
  • Reinforce appropriate performance etiquette, rehearsal etiquette, stage presence, audience behavior, and professional conduct.
  • Assist students with appropriate instrument placement, transitions, staging, movement, and logistical needs during rehearsals and performances.
  • Provide appropriate assistance during performances to support successful execution of percussion responsibilities.
  • Be punctual, prepared, and available for all assigned rehearsals, performances, meetings, and program responsibilities.
  • Student Supervision and Safety
  • Provide appropriate, active, and continuous supervision of students during assigned rehearsals, sectionals, performances, travel, transitions, equipment movement, and other music-program activities.
