Lake County Public Health Agency (LCPHA), an EOE employer, seeks a full-time Environmental Health Specialist to join our Consumer Protection inspection program. This role may be an entry‑level inspector position with training provided or a position for someone with previous experience and training. The employee serves as an inspector, consultant, administrator, program manager, and educator for retail food establishments, tobacco retail establishments, schools, and child‑cares.

The position assists with additional environmental health programs in the department, including radon, vector surveillance, water/air quality, environmental planning, and emergency response. Fluency in English is required; bilingual English/Spanish is preferred. The role reports to the Deputy Director of Public Health.

• Conduct retail food and temporary event food compliance inspections in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
• Review retail food establishment plans and perform pre‑operational inspections as required.
• Perform administrative duties related to retail food licensing and use provided software to manage permits.
• Manage administrative duties related to the Tobacco Retail Licensing program.
• Work closely with CDPHE to ensure all regulations are met in Lake County.
• Issue retail food licenses and review permits for special events.
• Collaborate with schools, childcare, retail food industry, and the public to reduce environmental health risks.
• Investigate public complaints related to health and safety.
• Conduct epidemiological investigations related to school, childcare, and retail food illness outbreaks and provide training in pandemic or illness‑related emergency preparedness.
• Serve on and participate with various committees and professional groups dealing with environmental health regulations, community safety, and emergency preparedness.
• Travel and attend environmental health trainings, meetings, workshops, and conferences, which may include overnight travel as needed.
• Update Environmental Health web pages and publish posts on Public Health social media to provide public information, reduce safety risks, and raise awareness of special health issues.
• Cross‑train to work the Public Health front desk and assist with administrative duties and Vital Records when necessary.
• Foster teamwork and open communication among staff; participate in office meetings, team‑building activities, and trainings.

• Bachelor’s degree in public health, environmental health, environmental science, natural sciences, or a closely related field; equivalent experience may be substituted for education.
• Experience in a public contact, service‑related role with the ability to remain flexible and sensitive to a diverse clientele.
• Preferred CDPHE Standardized Retail Food Inspector or FDA Standardized Retail Food Inspector credentials.
