High School Special Education Instructional Paraprofessional

The primary purpose of this role is to support students in accessing instruction, building independence, and growing both academically and socially within a structured and supportive environment. The paraprofessional works under the direction of licensed staff to implement learning activities, reinforce skills, and maintain a calm and safe classroom setting. This role includes working with students individually and in small groups, supporting behavior and social-emotional development, and assisting with personal and medical needs as required.

Position Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Implement and deliver with fidelity teacher-created lessons or activities for students according to IEP goals, asking questions for a clear understanding of directions. The creation of lesson plans may be necessary with supervision from the classroom teacher or special education dean.
  • Supervise students either in the classroom or in small groups.
  • Work directly with one-on-one students, in both classroom and other settings; implementing learning activities focusing on social-emotional learning, communication skills and behavior choices, and academics.
  • Assistance with personal hygiene related to bathroom needs, including assistance on the toilet, personal clean up, managing incontinence needs, and providing prompting and reminders for proper hygiene.
  • Observe and document student performance when requested.
  • Arrange and secure materials for the day’s activities.
  • Attend medical trainings with the school nurse and provide supervision to students with medical concerns for assigned time, following the students’ schedule.
  • Follow all medical and behavioral escalation plans to seek help when appropriate.
  • Maintain a positive attitude, behavior, and language towards students at all times.
  • Provide clear and consistent consequences for inappropriate behavior; implement behavior plans.
  • Use CPI and sensory interventions to help de-escalate when students may become agitated and physically aggressive.
  • Work with students with sensory/processing disorders; requires competencies in patience, flexibility, and consistency.
  • Supplement learning activities with brain breaks, time outs, and intervention as needed.
  • Cooperate/collaborate with building staff in order to support student growth.
  • Use first responder list for behavior or academic issues, as needed.
  • Cooperate/collaborate with building staff to help move students forward in their growth.
  • Supervise students before and after school, at lunchtime in the cafeteria, during recess, or at other times during the day – within 8-hour work limits.
  • Maintain communication with supervisor and other service providers during the school day to ensure safety and progress for students.
  • Adhere to the assigned schedule and duties set by the supervisor.
  • Adhere to all LCSD policies and procedures (including, but not limited to, attendance, conduct, staff-student relations, confidentiality, and professionalism).
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Applicants must hold a high school diploma or a GED
  • Successful experience in a K-12 school setting preferred
  • Hold an active substitute license with CDE (district will pay for this process)
  • A strong commitment to serving the unique strengths, needs, and aspirations of Lake County students.
  • Applicants must pass all required background checks and fingerprinting
