Safety Specialist II

This position is only open to Colorado state residents. New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

About the Position

This position will be based out of either Brush or Limon depending on the selected candidate. As the Safety Specialist II, you will operate under the guidance of the Region 4 Safety Manager and Safety Officer and assist with the operations and activities of the Region's Occupational Safety and Health programs. This position will learn and understand the daily operations and handle assigned portions of the Region's Occupational Safety and Health programs, while receiving continued training and experience in the programs.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist in developing and maintaining a safety program to prevent workplace accidents and hazards, or minimize their impact when they cannot be eliminated;
  • Assist in anticipating, identifying, and evaluating hazardous conditions and practices;
  • Assist in developing hazard control designs, methods, procedures and programs related to employee safety;
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining standards-based safety and health procedures;
  • Observe work activities to analyze and identify unrecognized and/or unaddressed safety hazards;
  • Develop and maintain a database of results of audits, visits, inspections, violations, etc.;
  • Review, compile, analyze, and interpret accident and loss prevention reports to identify injury, illness, and property damage trends and isolate systemic causes;
  • Advise and educate others on hazard controls and hazard control programs;
  • Draft and distribute safety bulletins and critical updates;
  • Assist in measuring, auditing, and evaluating the effectiveness of hazard controls and hazard control programs;
  • Serve on the Region Safety Committee and on the Region Accident Review Board;
  • Assist in developing and promoting safety awareness recognition programs;
  • Assist in developing and implementing emergency preparedness plans;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

  • Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, but we are flexible to meet your work/life balance needs while ensuring CDOT business needs are met.
  • Position is 100% on-site in main office with regular travel to other CDOT work facilities.
  • Travel required during work hours throughout Northeastern Colorado.
  • Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado.
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
Minimum Qualifications

Experience Only:
