Job Overview
The Water Utilities Operator I plays a crucial role in the Public Works/Utilities Department, focusing on the operation and maintenance of the water treatment and distribution system. This position entails a wide array of responsibilities, from routine maintenance to emergency responses, including monitoring water quality, operating treatment plants, and maintaining the distribution network. The operator works independently and collaborates with other team members to ensure system efficiency, safety, and compliance with regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities- Operate and maintain water treatment plants and distribution systems to ensure water quality and compliance with all regulations.
- Perform routine and emergency maintenance of the water system, including repairs and inspections of infrastructure such as pipes, valves, and meters.
- Monitor and adjust treatment processes, ensuring optimal operation and water quality.
- Collect water samples for testing and analysis to comply with environmental standards.
- Maintain accurate records of operational data, maintenance activities, and water quality results.
- Respond to customer inquiries and complaints, providing timely and effective solutions.
- Utilize specialized equipment for the maintenance and operation of the water system, including electronic locating tools and GIS for infrastructure mapping.
- Participate in the development and maintenance of emergency response plans for the water system.
- Support cross‑functional tasks within the Public Works Department, such as snow removal and emergency responses, as needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent, complemented by substantial experience in water treatment and distribution.
- Basic proficiency in math and science for water treatment.
- Certification as a Class C Water Operator in Colorado and level 1 water distribution, or above, required.
- Supplemental certifications in wastewater collection and/or distribution is preferred.
- Ability to obtain a Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within one year, if necessary.
- Physical ability to perform demanding tasks, including prolonged periods of sitting, bending, stooping, and heavy lifting, in various weather conditions.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to follow directions, work cooperatively, and engage with the public in a professional manner.
- Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with mandatory overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed. Participation in a rotating on‑call schedule for emergency response is required.
$37.44–49.54 per hour depending on certifications.
