About the Role
The Entry to Principal Engineer positions at Xcel Energy focus on developing and applying technical expertise in a specialized area of engineering. Candidates will manage small‑ to medium‑scale projects, provide field oversight of critical activities, and contribute to larger projects under the direction of senior engineers. Progression through the engineering levels is based on skill development, experience, and regulatory certifications.
Core Responsibilities- Apply technical standards, principles, and techniques to perform assignments of limited scope.
- Develop technical documentation including designs, calculations, reports, and standards.
- Assist in the development of procedures and support project activities in operations, maintenance, testing, and regulatory functions.
- Provide field engineering oversight for commissioning, testing, and inspections under supervision.
- Coordinate or lead project phases such as research, design, equipment selection, procurement, installation, and commissioning.
- Support bid/evaluation processes through basic analysis and calculations.
- Communicate effectively with internal business areas and outside vendors.
- Mentor and guide less experienced engineers and coordinate the work of interns, drafters, technicians, and craft personnel.
- Maintain continuous self‑development of technical skills and competencies.
- Assist with budgeting, estimating, forecasting, and work order management for engineering projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
- 0+ years of relevant engineering experience.
- Demonstration of unique technical skills and core competencies.
- Engineer in Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree from an ABET‑accredited program.
- 2+ years of relevant engineering experience.
- Broad knowledge and proficiency in a specialty area and related disciplines.
- Demonstrated unique technical skills and core competencies.
- EIT/FE certification strongly preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree from an ABET‑accredited program.
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience; 7+ years without EIT/FE.
- Required:
EIT/FE certification; PE registration may be required based on business need. - Demonstrated unique technical skills and core competencies.
- Bachelor’s degree from an ABET‑accredited program.
- 9+ years of relevant engineering experience with PE registration; 15+ years without PE.
- Demonstrated unique technical skills and core competencies.
- Strong aptitude with mechanical equipment and field oversight of contractor work.
- Willingness to engage in project management activities such as scope, schedule, and budget coordination.
- Entry Engineer: $70,000–$86,667 per year.
- Staff Engineer: $81,800–$106,267 per year.
- Senior Engineer: $97,000–$129,267 per year.
- Principal Engineer: $112,000–$156,600 per year.
