Fabrication, Mechanical Engineer, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Test Engineer
As our Mechanical Systems Technician, you will build, fabricate, and test the mechanical hardware that flies on and supports our vehicles. You'll build up Ground Support Equipment, machine actuators for gimbaling and removable flight vehicle structures, and fabricate prototype payload separation and spacecraft recovery systems, working hands‑on from engineering drawing to flight‑ready hardware.
About LEAPLEAP is transforming space logistics with rapid‑response, mass producible launch solutions designed to eliminate bottlenecks in space access. Leveraging proprietary propulsion technology and modern manufacturing techniques, LEAP delivers scalable and cost‑effective, launch solutions for national security, commercial payload deployment, and global point‑to‑point logistics applications.
Description Own Core Responsibilities- Build up Ground Support Equipment (GSE); fabricate mechanical actuators for gimbaling systems and removable structures on flight vehicles; and fabricate prototype payload separation systems and spacecraft recovery systems.
- Flight-ready GSE, gimbal actuators, and prototype payload separation and recovery hardware, along with build travelers, test records, and traceability documentation.
- Enable on‑time integration and test milestones by delivering flight‑ready GSE, actuators, and prototype hardware when the program needs them
- Deliver working, tested hardware — actuators, separation systems, and recovery mechanisms that perform correctly the first time they're needed
- Own build quality and traceability from raw material and drawing through final fit, function, and test
- Hold hardware to tight tolerances and repeatable release/deployment performance, since separation and recovery systems must work reliably under flight conditions
- Catch fit, tolerance, and functional issues early through fit checks and functional testing, reducing rework and risk during integration
- Bring manufacturability feedback directly to design engineers, shaping how prototypes evolve into producible flight hardware
- Hands‑on experience in mechanical fabrication, machining, or assembly, ideally including actuators, deployable structures, or separation/release mechanisms
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications to produce precision hardware
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Organized, detail‑oriented approach to work and documentation
- Ability to learn new tools, systems, or domains as needed
- Willingness to support production work as necessary
- Advanced machining experience (mills, lathes, CNC)
- Experience with fluid systems (pneumatics, hydraulics, propellant, or similar)
- Experience supporting launch or test operations
- CAD proficiency in Siemens NX
- Portable metrology experience (FARO arm, laser tracker, or similar)
- Background in heavy equipment manufacturing
- Level 1 (1–3 years): $19.23 – $36.06 / hour
- Level 2 (3–5 years): $33.00 – $48.07 / hour
- Level 3 (5–9 years): $45.00 – $62.50 / hour
- Level 4 (10+ years): $50.00 – $72.12 / hour
The estimated salary range for this role reflects various compensation factors. The final offer depends on factors such as work experience, education, training, key skills, and business needs.
In addition, LEAP provides a comprehensive benefits package for full‑time employees, which includes:
