Join the City of Avondale Police Department as a Detention Officer and play a vital role in maintaining the safety, security, and integrity of our detention center. Responsibilities
- Provide care, custody, and control of inmates at the Avondale Police Department Detention Center.
- Provide support for the Avondale Police Patrol Division and Tolleson Police Patrol Division in conducting transports of arrested subjects to the 4th Avenue Jail.
- Ensure completion of all bookings and processes for newly arrested subjects’ misdemeanor and/or felony offenses.
- Ensure proper accountability and use of supplies for the staff and inmate population.
- Maintain a clean, safe environment in the jail.
- Conduct numerous counts of the inmate population, including fire and safety inspections, and ensure inmates are released appropriately.
- Supervise visitation and notify victims of inmate releases, warrant pick‑ups, and the service of Orders of Protection and Injunctions Against Harassment.
- Assist in the functions of patrol units to pick up and transport prisoners when required.
- Assist the general public with questions regarding the status of housed inmates and direct callers to appropriate agencies.
- Maintain daily logs of shift activity by creating and preserving arrest files.
- Maintain inventory of all forms needed by Detention and Patrol.
- Process inmates/prisoners by completing paperwork, searching prisoners, fingerprinting, interviewing for medical conditions, confiscating property, and taking photos.
- Distribute meals, perform inmate movements, oversee visitation, respond to medical emergencies, process inmate mail, and handle releases and bond procedures.
- Ensure timely court appearances for all prisoners by escorting to City Court, preparing bond receipts, and collecting bonds.
- Prepare inmates for video court, send court lists to clerks, and manage inmate movement during video court.
- Maintain working vehicle by managing routine maintenance and fueling duties.
- Purchase food and prepare meals for inmates by shopping, storing, preparing, and dispensing meals on weekends and holidays.
- Attend required departmental meetings and trainings.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
- Successful graduation from an accredited Police Academy, Corrections Academy, or Detention Academy.
- One (1) year of experience as a Detention Officer, Corrections Officer, or Police Officer.
- Valid Arizona Driver's License.
- Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological examination, medical exam, and drug screen.
