The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) has facilities in Canon City, Colorado. This posting will be used to fill vacant positions at our Canon City locations. Position

The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities. CO I officers support the CDOC mission, vision, and values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. They communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers, and the public; work as part of a cohesive team, and manage a diverse inmate population.

Responsibilities include ensuring the safety of the public, staff, and inmates, and performing duties that support security operations.

Responsibilities
  • Work directly with inmates in a locked facility;
  • Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas;
  • Man a post (annual firearms certification required);
  • Monitor facility perimeter and detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles;
  • Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment, and alarms;
  • Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule;
  • Escort and transport inmates in state vehicles;
  • Monitor visiting areas;
  • Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts;
  • Cross-check and maintain movement logs;
  • Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip, vehicle searches);
  • Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety, and sanitation standards;
  • Inspect inmate mail and property;
  • Respond to emergencies (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes) using established protocols;
  • Follow tool and key control procedures and ensure proper storage and documentation;
  • Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices;
  • Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED certificate.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • No felony convictions as described in policy; must pass a background investigation and provide disposition for any charges.
