Detentions Captain

The Lake County Sheriff's Office is looking for an experienced Detentions supervisor, with a strong desire to serve our community with professionalism and honesty. The ability to connect with a diverse community in a rural setting, preferably with bilingual proficiency and a desire for public service.

Position Summary:

Under general direction, plans, organizes, oversees, coordinates, and manages the staff of a major functional area of the Sheriff's Office; participates in the development of policies and strategies for division operations; manages the effective use of division or unit resources to improve organizational productivity and public service; provides complex and responsible support to assigned management personnel in areas of expertise; and performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education:

High school diploma or GED equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. Associates level or equivalent college credit hours or above.

Experience:

Five (5) years of Law Enforcement experience. Two (2) years of experience performing duties at a level equivalent to the classification of Sheriff's Sergeant. Experience with law enforcement related administrative duties and grants. At least one leadership class certification (POST/CSOC/LEEDA) or equivalent. At least one instructor certification in a law enforcement related field. Licenses:
Possession of a valid Colorado driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment.

Physical Demands:
Mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; to operate a motor vehicle and to visit various County and meeting sites; to occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information; primarily a sedentary office classification although standing and walking between work areas; periodic fieldwork requiring walking or running or standing on uneven terrain, and climbing and descending structures to access crime scenes and to identify problems or hazards.

Strength and stamina to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 15 pounds; to occasionally apprehend, lift, carry, push, and pull victims, suspects and equipment as determined within P.O.S.T physical standards, which may include the use of proper equipment. Vision to maintain firearms qualifications and to read printed materials and a computer screen; vision and manual dexterity to operate an emergency response vehicle at high rates of speed in emergencies.

Hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. Finger and manual dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; to operate police services equipment and firearms. Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances.

As situations demand, incumbents may serve as an Incident Commander in the field. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
