Senior Planner – Community Development Department

The Town of Snowmass Village is seeking a Senior Planner to join our Community Development Department. This role manages high‑priority, complex land‑use applications and building permits while supporting daily operations and strategic long‑range planning initiatives. The incumbent operates with a high degree of independence, professional judgment, and a collaborative communication style focused on exemplary public service.

Responsibilities
  • Provide customer service to Town staff, the general public, and consultants/developers regarding Town plans, zoning matters, and development requirements; conduct meetings with engineers, developers, architects, the general public and Town staff in person, via telephone, or internet.
  • Support Planner of the Day (POD) functions, answering questions from internal partners and assisting customers with solution‑oriented advice.
  • Attend pre‑application meetings with property owners, prospective developers, and representatives from all applicable Town departments.
  • Review, interpret and analyze applications for compliance with Town regulations, zoning requirements, service provider requirements, and good planning practices.
  • Write staff reports, resolutions and ordinances for land‑use cases, including background research, thorough analysis and staff recommendations.
  • Attend meetings and make presentations to boards or commissions including the Planning Commission and Town Council; may lead weekly Development Review Team meetings.
  • Draft and process amendments to the Town’s Land Use Code, Zoning Map, and Comprehensive Plan.
Qualifications and Skills
  • General understanding of historic preservation laws, regulations, and programs; transportation planning principles and practices; and sustainability techniques, principles and practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban/Regional Planning or a related field from an accredited college or university and at least 3 years of related work experience. A master’s degree in urban/regional planning or a related area of study is preferred. Experience may be substituted for education.
  • Experience planning in local government preferred.
  • AICP certification desired.
  • Ability to identify and suggest needed changes to Town codes, standards, and procedures.
  • Ability to prepare and analyze technical and administrative reports, statements and correspondence.
  • Ability to present technical data verbally, in writing, with graphics and maps to a variety of boards and commissions.
  • Ability to serve as project manager for complex planning projects, studies and/or land use applications.
  • Ability to utilize specialized computer applications applicable to planning design and review.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Excellent organizational and record‑keeping skills.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analysis capability, synthesizing complex facts and issues to propose successful solutions tailored to competing interests.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for preparing and presenting planning reports and projects.
  • Ability to interact with the public in a positive, collaborative, non‑confrontational manner and manage conflict to an effective and positive outcome.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team setting.
