Crisis Counselor, Mental Health
Under the supervision of the Co-Response Program Manager, the Co-Response Clinician partners with law enforcement and first responders to provide on-site behavioral health support to individuals experiencing crisis related to mental health, substance use, homelessness, and/or other destabilizing factors. This role focuses on diverting individuals from the criminal justice system and emergency departments by delivering immediate de-escalation, clinical assessment, case management, and linkage to services in a range of community settings.
The clinician plays a critical role in crisis resolution, safety planning, and coordinating long‑term support tailored to individual needs. Participation in and successful completion of an approximately 90‑day field training/probation period. The position will work in Chaffee County and requires the ability to travel as necessary.

Responsibilities- Respond jointly with law enforcement and other first responders to behavioral health, suicide risk, homelessness, trauma, and other crisis‑related calls in homes, public spaces, schools, encampments, roadsides, and other community settings.
- Provide immediate on‑scene crisis intervention, clinical assessment, de‑escalation, risk evaluation, safety planning, brief counseling, and behavioral health consultation to support scene stabilization and informed decision‑making.
- Determine the least restrictive and clinically appropriate level of care, including voluntary safety planning, referral to community‑based services, or initiation of involuntary hold/commitment procedures when legally and clinically necessary.
- Coordinate post‑crisis follow‑up, case management, resource navigation, and warm handoffs to behavioral health treatment, substance use services, housing supports, hospitals, family supports, public benefits, and other community partners to reduce repeat crisis calls, avoidable arrests, and unnecessary emergency department use.
- Complete accurate and timely clinical documentation, incident follow‑up, referrals, data collection, and required reports; collaborate with law enforcement, supervisors, clinicians, and community stakeholders to improve program response, training, and service coordination.
- Comply with all departmental, Sheriff’s Office, and Co‑Response Program policies, procedures, protocols, training, supervision, and professional development requirements.
- Coordinate or provide client transportation as needed to support safety, stabilization, access to care, or service linkage.
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related behavioral health field.
- 1+ years of clinical experience in behavioral health, crisis intervention, or co‑occurring.
- CPR and First Aid certification or obtain within 60 days of hire.
- Valid Colorado driver’s license with acceptable motor vehicle record.
- Acceptable background check and fingerprint results.
