Position Summary

Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking a skilled and patient-focused Ultrasound Technologist to join our Diagnostic Imaging team on a part-time basis.

Under the supervision of the Diagnostic Imaging Manager, the Ultrasound Technologist performs diagnostic sonographic examinations as ordered by providers, selecting appropriate equipment and techniques based on the anatomy and clinical indication. This position also assists physicians with procedures such as biopsies and aspirations and works closely with patients, families, radiologists, providers, and other departments to ensure high-quality, coordinated care.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical sonography skills with sound clinical judgment, excellent patient care, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a rural hospital environment.

Key Responsibilities Diagnostic Sonography
  • Perform diagnostic sonographic examinations as ordered by providers
  • Perform clinical assessments and diagnostic sonography and/or echocardiography examinations
  • Select appropriate transducers, scanning techniques, and protocols based on the examination and clinical indication
  • Review provider orders for appropriateness and communicate with providers when clarification or correction is needed
  • Review patient history and prior examinations to ensure consistency with the ordered study and clinical diagnosis
  • Use independent judgment to differentiate normal and pathologic findings
  • Adapt examinations based on anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic findings
  • Analyze sonographic images and relevant medical history and communicate findings appropriately
  • Review examinations for technical accuracy and submit completed studies to the radiologist
Patient Care & Safety
  • Provide compassionate, patient-centered care throughout the imaging experience
  • Assess patient condition and ensure safety during examinations and procedures
  • Explain procedures and provide appropriate patient and family education
  • Maintain patient comfort, dignity, privacy, and well-being
  • Use appropriate patient identification procedures and National Patient Safety Goals
  • Transport or assist patients using wheelchairs, stretchers, gurneys, or hospital beds as needed
  • Perform portable ultrasound examinations when required
  • Provide age-appropriate care based on each patient's individual needs
Procedural Support
  • Assist physicians and providers with ultrasound-guided procedures, including biopsies and aspirations
  • Prepare procedure and examination rooms
  • Create and maintain sterile fields when appropriate
  • Assist with department-specific provider procedures
  • Follow infection prevention and universal precaution requirements
  • Ensure appropriate equipment and supplies are available for procedures
Quality & Equipment Management
  • Perform required quality control procedures to ensure proper equipment performance
  • Maintain ultrasound equipment and promptly report malfunctions
  • Clean and disinfect ultrasound equipment and transducers according to PSMC protocols
  • Maintain adequate ultrasound and medical supply inventories
  • Follow protocols established by the radiology reading group
  • Support quality assurance activities and departmental standards
  • Participate in cross-training of employees and student technologists as appropriate
Documentation & Collaboration
  • Complete required documentation within Cerner and other applicable systems
