Position SummaryPagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Environmental Services Worker to join our team. The Environmental Services Worker helps maintain a clean and safe environment throughout the hospital campus by following strict infection control standards, properly handling waste, and ensuring patient care areas, public spaces, and staff areas are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
This is much more than a housekeeping position. Environmental Services is an important part of our patient care and infection prevention team. From cleaning and disinfecting patient rooms and high-touch surfaces to performing terminal cleaning after discharge, EVS Workers directly contribute to the safety, comfort, and overall experience of everyone who enters PSMC.

- Clean and disinfect assigned areas throughout the medical center according to PSMC policies and procedures
- Thoroughly clean patient care areas, including beds, bedside tables, chairs, commodes, floors, bathrooms, and other high-touch surfaces
- Clean public spaces, private areas, and staff offices throughout the medical center campus
- Perform deep cleaning and terminal cleaning of discharged patient areas
- Clean and sanitize appropriate medical equipment according to established protocols
- Ensure assigned areas are thoroughly cleaned before moving to other assignments
- Follow established infection control practices to help prevent the spread of germs and healthcare-associated infections
- Follow appropriate infection precautions based on posted patient room signage
- Properly collect, sort, handle, and dispose of medical waste, including biohazardous materials
- Follow safety procedures when handling cleaning chemicals and biohazardous materials
- Understand the proper applications and uses of various cleaning and disinfecting chemicals
- Follow established procedures for storing, handling, and maintaining cleaning equipment and supplies
- Track cleaning solutions by open and expiration dates
- Maintain assigned areas in a clean, sanitary, and hazard-free condition
- Maintain cleaning equipment and supplies
- Distribute clean linens to assigned patient care areas
- Monitor inventory, labeling, and proper storage of supplies
- Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly
- Complete assigned duties efficiently and on schedule
- Prioritize tasks to ensure the most important responsibilities are completed first
- Adapt to changing departmental needs, including staffing shortages, mechanical failures, disasters, and other unexpected situations
- Assist with orienting new Environmental Services staff as assigned
- Maintain a positive, respectful, and professional attitude when interacting with patients, visitors, employees, and providers
- Work independently while collaborating effectively with the Environmental Services and healthcare teams
- Communicate effectively with leadership and coworkers
- Respond appropriately to changing priorities and urgent needs
- Help ensure patients receive room service in a timely manner
- Support a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment throughout PSMC
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Previous hospital Environmental Services (EVS), housekeeping, custodial, or healthcare cleaning experience desired but not required
- Current AHA BLS Heart Saver certification required
- CHEST certification desired but not required
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness
- Ability to learn healthcare-specific cleaning, disinfection, and infection control practices
- Ability to perform repetitive cleaning tasks while standing and walking for extended periods
- Ability to work independently and stay on task
- Strong time-management and organizational skills
- Ability to work efficiently in an environment with frequent interruptions
- Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful or changing situations
- Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Office and electronic health records
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, visitors, coworkers, and healthcare professionals
- Additional language skills desired but not required
