Utility Technician, Maintenance Worker
The Senior Wastewater Collections Operator performs cleaning, inspection, operation, maintenance, documentation, and repair of the City's wastewater collection system.
This position operates a variety of heavy equipment and specialized wastewater collection system equipment, such as a combination jet/vacuum sewer cleaning truck and a CCTV vehicle, to perform the necessary duties of the position.
Under the direct supervision of the Wastewater Collections Supervisor, the Senior Wastewater Collections Operator will provide guidance and direction to non-senior Operators and ensure the crew follows the instructions of the Lead Wastewater Collections Operator. The position is responsible for accurately documenting all daily work activities in the City's asset management system, as well as adhering to all department policies, procedures, programs, and safety guidelines.
The Senior Wastewater Collections Operator is responsible for responding to emergency situations both during duty hours and after hours, including weekend callouts. This role requires participation in the ‘on-call’ program and responding to after-hour callbacks on a rotating basis, as necessary.
Performs operation, maintenance, daily inspections, and repairs on wastewater collection infrastructure including sewer mains, lift stations, force mains, manholes, cleanouts, and all other associated appurtenances. Assists with the sewer line structured cleaning and inspection programs.
Operates specialized wastewater collection system equipment such as a combination jet/vacuum sewer cleaning truck, CCTV vehicle, utility crane trucks and other equipment to support operation, maintenance, and repair activities.
Responds to customer complaints related to sewer system infrastructure. Clarifies sewer ordinances, codes, department policies, procedures, and programs for customers as applicable.
Uses Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to track work completed by the collections team. Ensures correct work order input, completes work orders, follows other work order policies and procedures as put forth by the Wastewater Collections Supervisor.
Advances the City’s CCTV inspection program, which records, identifies, and scores defects within the City’s sewer infrastructure utilizing the NASSCO scoring system.
Responds to emergency situations, including investigating and evaluating customer complaints related to sewer services such as sewer overflows, lift station failures, and odor or vector complaints. Participates in the rotational ‘on-call’ program as required by the position.
Follows all established safety procedures and JHAs for the position. Utilizes safety equipment (PPE) and monitors the work environment to ensure the safety of employees and other individuals. Participates and completes annual regulatory and safety training and occasionally enters confined spaces by safely following OSHA safety regulations.
Performs other duties as required. May be called upon to assist other divisions within the Department or other Departments within the City.
High School diploma or GED equivalency is required.
Work requires a broad knowledge of the principles and practices of sewer system operation and maintenance, lift station operation and maintenance, or operation of heavy equipment.
A minimum of three (3) years of experience working with wastewater collection facilities or similar facilities is required.
An equivalent combination of education and job-related experience may be considered on a year-for-year basis.
Must possess an Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Wastewater Collections Operator Grade II upon hire and must be able to maintain certification for the duration of employment.
Must possess a Class ‘A’ CDL with tanker endorsement upon hire and must be able to maintain a license for the duration of employment.
Must possess a NASSCO Certification or have the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
Work requires the ability to read work orders, system schematics, construction plans, specifications, regulations, permits, Safety Data Sheets, O&M manuals, standard operating procedures, and other work‑related materials.
