KLZR 91.7 FM in Westcliffe, CO, is a nonprofit community radio station with the Mission "to entertain, inform and connect all who care about the Wet Mountain Valley."

Operating since 2004, KLZR broadcasts 24/7 and produces a daily hyperlocal online newsletter serving residents, businesses, nonprofits, and visitors throughout the region. The organization is committed to providing local news, information, music, cultural programming and community engagement opportunities.

KLZR is seeking an experienced, visionary, and collaborative General Manager to lead KLZR into its next era of growth and community impact. This is a unique opportunity for a leader passionate about public media, nonprofit management, and community engagement to oversee a beloved station with deep local roots.

The General Manager is the "public face" of KLZR and is responsible for executing the station's mission, strategic objectives, and operations. The General Manager's primary responsibility will be to ensure KLZR's long-term financial success by supporting all revenue streams, including on-air fundraising, underwriting, grant applications, and donor cultivation. The General Manager will also oversee all day-to-day broadcast operations and provide sound non-profit management.

This role combines the leadership scope of a nonprofit Executive Director with the technical and content responsibilities of a Radio Station Manager and the strategic acumen of a Public Media Leader. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in team-building and community engagement; can manage and motivate a small staff and a large group of volunteers; and, has a proven fundraising track record.

Leading a Passionate Team

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the radio station
  • Ensure effective administrative support and financial oversight
  • Supervise and evaluate part-time staff, contractors, and volunteers
  • Coordinate the activities of volunteer DJs, program hosts, and event volunteers
  • Foster a positive, collaborative culture among staff and volunteers

Growing the Organization

  • Lead the station in successful fundraising efforts that grow revenues
  • Build and maintain relationships with donors, sponsors and community partners
  • Coordinate fundraising campaigns, membership drives and special events
  • Track fundraising performance and provide regular reports to the Board

Building Community Connections

  • Serve as a visible representative of the organization throughout the community
  • Develop partnerships with local organizations, schools, businesses, and public agencies
  • Promote the organization's mission and expand its audience and supporter base

Advancing Local Media Programming

  • Oversee programming, scheduling, and operational activities of the radio station
  • Ensure effective daily broadcast
  • Support production and publication of the daily online newsletter
  • Ensure compliance with FCC regulations and nonprofit requirements
  • Identify opportunities to expand reach and impact

Required Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, donors, and board members
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Experience managing budgets and financial performance
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple responsibilities
  • Ability to work occasional evenings/weekends

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in senior management position in a nonprofit organization
  • Experience in media, broadcasting, journalism, publishing or communications
  • Strong public presentation skills necessary to represent KLZR successfully
  • Familiarity with underwriting, sponsorship sales, or advertising sales
  • Successful experience in fundraising activities
  • Understanding of website development and use of social media
