Job Overview
The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) is hiring a Nurse III Supervisor to provide skilled nursing care to incarcerated offenders in Canon City, CO. This position is open to Colorado state residents only. The appointment will begin after the current hiring freeze is lifted, anticipated January 1 2026.
Description of JobThe Nurse III Supervisor oversees professional nursing care in outpatient clinics, infirmaries, or specialized cell‑house settings.
Responsibilities include:
- Document clinical findings accurately, both handwritten and electronic, to maintain comprehensive inmate medical records.
- Provide patient education, including self‑care techniques and medication information.
- Deliver individualized nursing care in clinical settings.
- Perform routine and emergency physical and emotional assessments during triage, sickline, and emergencies.
- Ensure patient safety and security, including contraband control and item accounting.
- Manage payroll, scheduling, and performance plans; coordinate staff orientation and assignments.
- Serve as on‑call supervisor, arranging coverage and approving overtime.
- Current, valid Registered Nurse license from Colorado or a state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
- Three (3) years of full‑time nursing experience, or equivalent experience proven by documentation.
- Minimum academic credentials: a bachelor's degree in nursing can substitute one year of experience; a master’s or doctoral degree can substitute two years.
- Legal eligibility to work in the United States; no sponsorship provided.
- Effective staff supervision and offender patient treatment.
- Maintenance of required licensure and credentials.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; fluency in English.
- Problem‑solving, critical thinking, and stress tolerance in potentially violent situations.
- Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure.
- Physical ability to complete required defensive tactics training and perform emergency restraint and control.
- One year or more of nursing supervisory experience in a correctional environment.
- Knowledge of correctional health protocols and experience with offender populations.
- Successful completion of medical and drug screening, including a 10‑year work history for background investigation.
- Minimum age of 21 and possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- No felony convictions, especially those related to sexual offenses or violence against offenders.
- Completion of the six‑week CDOC Basic Training, including defensive tactics.
- Willingness and ability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Physically capable of standing, walking, climbing stairs, and performing defensive tactics.
- Ability to communicate with a diverse population of offenders.
