CDOC Part Time Registered Nurse; Nurse

Location: Buena Vista, CO (part‑time position)

This position provides skilled nursing care for incarcerated inmates in an outpatient clinic, infirmary, or specialized cell house setting. The role involves acute care, chronic support, and emergency interventions.

• Document inmate medical records accurately and timely;
• Provide standardized patient education within nursing guidelines;
• Transcribe medical orders and shift‑change reports;
• Preserve confidentiality of patient information;
• Administer medications (PO, IM, IV, SQ, SL) and manage medication lines, infirmaries, cell houses, and PRN;
• Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures;
• Ensure ordering and restocking of medications and supplies;
• Participate in restraining inmates for medical reasons when necessary;
• Observe and report inmates’ physical and emotional conditions during triage, sick line, and emergencies;
• Conduct physical and emotional assessments of inmates during triage and emergencies using basic nursing protocols;
• Promote safety and security through observation and contraband control, including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control;
• Operate clinical equipment as available in the assigned work unit;
• Follow Life Safety policies and procedures applicable to the unit;
• Report security or safety violations in writing;
• Attend required training, including a 2‑day self‑defense course;
• Be willing to work any shift, weekends, and holidays.

• Current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or a state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact;
• Demonstrated ability to treat inmate patients daily in various settings;
• Compliance with confidentiality standards and emergency response procedures;
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and decision‑making skills;
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions;
• Capacity to work a variety of shifts on a full‑time basis;
• Physical ability to complete defensive tactics and related duties.

• Effective nursing care of inmates in multiple settings;
• Adherence to patient confidentiality and security standards;
• Emergency response to medical and safety incidents;
• Clear verbal and written communication in English;
• Strong discernment and decision‑making;
• Self‑control in high‑stress, potentially violent situations;
• Alertness, emotional stability, and resilience under pressure;
• Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high‑stakes interaction.

• Correctional nursing experience;
• Charge nurse or supervisory experience;
• Acute or long‑term nursing experience.

• Must be no older than 21 years, possess a valid driver’s license and badge, and hold a high school diploma or GED;
• No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history;
• Valid U.S. work authorization only; no H‑1B sponsorship;
• Successful completion of all Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training modules and defensive tactics; and
• Compliance with drug screening and background investigation requirements.
