Minimum of two years in labor and delivery caregiving - License:
Current, active Registered Nurse license in the State of Colorado - Certifications:
BLS and NRP required; ACLS and NRP preferred - Education:
Minimum of an Associate’s Degree (ADN) from an accredited nursing program
A Registered Nurse (RN) for the Family Birthing Center is able to independently assess and evaluate the health status of both labor and neonate patients using objective and subjective data, identifying healthcare problems, and collaborating with patients, families, providers, and the healthcare team to establish realistic and measurable short‑ and long‑term goals. The RN prioritizes needs through planning and implements all interventions, including patient education and counseling, and maintains safe and effective care throughout each episode of care.
All interventions are evaluated and documented to determine outcomes and to adjust care as needed; the RN acts as a patient advocate.
- Directly provides patient care and monitors the patient's response to labor, delivery, and postpartum phases, assisting and educating in breastfeeding as needed.
- Promotes wellness for the mother during pregnancy and after delivery through continuous education.
- Provides education to the mother about infant care.
- Documents all events and education in the patient medical record utilizing computers.
- Communicates the patient's condition verbally and in writing to the physician and the nursing supervisor.
- Assists other Family Birthing Center staff in maintaining skills and learning new procedures and equipment.
- Collaborates with the nursery nurse in the care of mother/baby couplet.
- Assists physicians with procedures.
- Assists the nurse manager as requested.
- Assists staff with emergencies in other nursing units when possible.
- Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe environment for all patients in the Family Birthing Center unit.
Employees are regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk and hear; frequently stand, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, or crouch; occasionally walk or sit; and must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision for reading medical records and monitors, color vision to observe patient fluids, and peripheral vision to observe surroundings during patient care.
