About the Opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an Assistant Project Biologist for our Denver, Colorado Program Management business. The role requires experience in natural resource management, technical writing, and construction compliance in Colorado and Wyoming and is a full‑time hourly position reporting to a Project Manager. Hybrid work environments are encouraged.

What you will accomplish
  • Write natural resource reports and sections of documents including threatened and endangered species habitat assessment reports, aquatic resource reports, biological evaluations, environmental assessments, and environmental impact statements.
  • Write and review reports and sections for content, clarity, and consistency, including construction compliance reports.
  • Use compliance management platforms such as Fulcrum, Procore, and Smartsheets to organize construction compliance information.
  • Lead, oversee, and complete both large and small reports, managing multiple report writers on larger projects.
  • Organize, review, and transfer field data, and assist in writing or produce technical reports and permit applications related to the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, NEPA, Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, and other relevant regulations. Report writing may comprise up to 65% of the position’s time.
  • Prepare reports and permit documents as the primary author and conduct quality assurance/quality control.
  • Evaluate report content and organization to ensure consistency across documents for the same client.
  • Take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to ensure tasks are completed effectively.
  • Assist SWCA editors and project managers in training staff in writing-related matters.
  • Support writing reports by training technical staff on best practices for reviewing field data, interpreting and compiling narratives and associated forms, and integrating data into comprehensive reports.
  • Train and mentor technical staff and new report writers on SWCA procedures and unique report writing requirements for each agency.
  • Organize and track all reports through assignment, writing, senior review, editing, and submission.
  • Work with the team to create training videos, templates, and checklists.
  • Take responsibility for team safety, develop safety plans when applicable, and anticipate potential hazards.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, botany, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of environmental industry experience in the public or private sector.
  • Experience working with scientists, planners, engineers, contractors, and agency specialists, particularly in a construction compliance setting.
  • Proficiency in writing natural resources and construction compliance technical reports, including those related to the Endangered Species Act, Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, or other biological requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of four (4) years of environmental industry experience in the public or private sector.
  • Experience preparing reports and permits as the primary author for construction compliance projects (transmission and wind energy).
  • Strong construction compliance experience.
Additional Information
  • Ability to travel, walk, and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather and rugged terrain.
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Moderate travel is anticipated, with fieldwork potentially reaching 50% of the time seasonally for assistant project biologists.
