Detentions Deputy

The Lake County Sheriff's Office is looking for the right candidate with a strong desire to serve our community with professionalism and honesty. The ability to connect with a diverse community in a rural setting, preferably with bilingual proficiency and a desire for public service.

Incentives Include:

  • Additional pay potential for fluency in Spanish, degrees in postsecondary education, certified field training officer, and other training certificates.
  • Overtime opportunities paid at time and a half, after 40 in hours in a 7-day work week.
  • County employees can also receive an annual allowance for health and wellness costs.
  • End of Year bonus. Based on months of service within the year.
  • Duty Firearm will be provided.
  • All uniform, belts, holsters, and other equipment, including ballistic body armor and plates, with the exception of footwear, are provided. Ballistic armor is replaced every five years at no cost to the employee.
  • Current P.O.S.T, applicable instructor skills certifications will be considered for incentive bonuses to salary. (Firearms, arrest control, driving skills, other)
  • Culture of personal and professional development through skills instructor courses, education, higher learning, etc.
  • Advanced Education Pay. Up to 6% salary increase for applicable college education completed.
  • Spanish/English bilingual skills incentive up to 4%. A supplemental pay increase to salary is available for bilingual skills demonstrated through testing.

Position Summary The Detention Deputy is responsible for the care, transport and security of all inmates lawfully in the custody of the Sheriff. Performs duties related to the daily operation of the jail. General Duties and Responsibilities Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Essential Functions

  • Monitor and observe all individuals entering the jail to ensure safety and security.
  • Control and restrict access to the jail and other secured areas.
  • Conduct routine interior inspections of the facility and perform inmate checks at regular intervals.
  • Ensure jail security by verifying proper confinement and monitoring the safety of inmates, staff, detainees, and visitors.
  • Process inmate bookings and releases, including handling of bond documentation.
  • Manage inmate cash accounts and regularly update inmate records.
  • Accurately log inmate activity and jail operations on a continual basis.
  • Operate and maintain various equipment including two-way radios, fingerprint scanners, breathalyzers, computers, fax machines, copiers, and telephones.
  • Provide courtroom testimony or hearing appearances as required.
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date jail records and filing systems.
  • Perform cell and pod searches after all inmate intakes and releases to ensure areas are free of contraband and weapons.
  • Conduct thorough weekly inspections of all jail areas—including booking, cells, pods, and work release spaces and document and remove any contraband, report violations of jail rules.
  • Support road deputies, court security, and dispatch personnel with security matters as needed.
  • Escort inmates to court-ordered destinations using approved transport procedures.

Requirements Compensation will be determined by the applicant's full skillset with consideration of the below:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must successfully complete a written examination, oral board interview, and psychological evaluation.
  • Vision must be adequate to perform duties, with or without corrective lenses.
  • Hearing must be sufficient, with or without hearing aids, to communicate effectively by phone and radio.
