OverviewSentara Health is hiring an Armed Security Officer for Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, in Norfolk, VA. This is a Full‑Time position with a day shift schedule.
Hours- Full Time, Day shift
- 7:00am - 3:30pm (8‑hour shifts)
- Rotating Weekends
The Armed Security Officer provides a safe environment for patients, visitors and employees at Sentara Hospitals and Free‑standing Emergency Departments. All Armed Security Officers exercise discretion regarding weapon use, employing the weapon only when all non‑violent options have been exhausted. They actively monitor Concealed Weapons Detection System(s) at division entrances, inform visitors or patients of prohibited weapons, secure weapons for safekeeping, patrol the campus and monitor activity around buildings and grounds, and respond to routine and emergency situations.
Duties include camera surveillance, maintaining department logs and records, using computer skills for daily activity documentation, conducting security investigations, evaluating situations, and taking appropriate steps for professional and timely resolution.
- Education:
High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required) - Certification/Licensure:
Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (Required) - Virginia DCJS – Armed Officer Certificate within 90 days of hire (Required)
- Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification by IAHSS within 90 days of hire (Required)
- Education/
Experience:
One year of security experience (Required) - Former military or law enforcement experience (Preferred)
- Fit for Duty assessment pass;
Psychological Evaluation and Assessment by selected provider; ability to obtain required certificates within 90 days of hire
