Heavy Equipment Mechanic
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision performs journey-level work in overhauling, repairing, turning and related tasks on passenger vehicles, pick-up-trucks, emergency vehicles and heavy equipment and performs related duties as required.

Maintains records of repair work completed, parts replaced and routine maintenance performed and ensures work area is clean, safe, and orderly.
Competes simple reports regarding materials handled, equipment operations, fuel and/or oil used, and other related information. Prepare, process and distribute work orders.
Perform repairs on all vehicles and heavy equipment for all county departments (including, but not limited to: emergency response vehicles, busses, loaders, backhoes, motor graders, dozers, tractor/trailers, rollers). Repairs may include rebuilding engines, pumps, removing and/or replacing engines, transmissions and differentials as needed.
Diagnose mechanical problems; repairs and rebuild water pumps. Diagnose problems and repair breaks, transmissions, rear-ends, clutches, hydraulic systems, valves, pumps and electrical systems.
Performs required preventative maintenance tasks. Perform tune-ups on County vehicles as needed.
Operates vehicles and construction equipment
Performs welding and fabricating tasks.
OTHER DUTIESPerforms other related duties as assigned.
Overtime may be required for snow removal, flood, wildfire control and to ready equipment for operation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSAny combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying.
Education - High school diploma or general diploma degree or general education degree (GED) supplemented by vocational training in automotive mechanics.
Experiencethree years of experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities.

Certifications:
Possession of and ability to maintain a Colorado Driver's License.
Knowledge of:
A knowledge and ability to make necessary repairs on brakes, steering and suspension of vehicles/equipment using technical manuals, technical support and/or assistance from coworkers.
Electronic controlled diesel and gasoline engines and transmissions, rear ends steering and suspension, drive trains, anti-lock air brake systems, hydraulic systems, HVAC, electrical systems on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
General repair and preventative maintenance techniques, tools and equipment used in repair work.
A knowledge and ability to weld, cut and fabricate equipment to make necessary repairs.
Electronic troubleshooting using electrical and computer equipment.
A wide variety of electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and mechanical systems of gasoline and diesel-powered light and heavy equipment.
Maintenance and repair tools, equipment, techniques, and practices.
General operation of automotive and light, medium, and heavy construction equipment.
Safe operation of a variety of hand and power tools.
Practices and procedures to meet accepted quality and safety standards.
Ability to:Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to make electronic repairs on vehicles and equipment, repair body damage, lights, radios, mirrors and windshields
Ability to operate, move and transport equipment as needed
Diagnose and repair malfunctions on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
Accurately diagnose, identify, and repair related, potential, or existing problems
Perform duties independently without close supervision.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
Operate and move vehicles and equipment as needed.
Maintain and repair assigned vehicles or equipment to meet service deadlines and established performance standards and objectives.
Operate and communicate on two-way radios.
Understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
Pass random drug and alcohol testing.
Provide and maintain proper hand tools to perform job requirements.
