As our Water Meter Maintenance Technician, you'll be at the heart of a variety of dynamic tasks, in support of the operation and maintenance of the Town’s commercial, irrigation and residential meters and other Town infrastructure. You’ll play a crucial part in ensuring the smooth operation of our meter reading and service processes, contributing to the satisfaction of our residential and commercial customers.
This position is primarily working for the Meters Division within Utilities, however cross-training and other duties may be assigned.
Entry Level – If you are new, no experience required; we offer hands‑on training. If you have more experience, we may consider higher levels.
Hourly Pay Rate by Level- Water Meter Maintenance Technician I (Hiring Range $23.15–$26.73/hr; Full Range $23.15–$30.32/hr)
- Water Meter Maintenance Technician II (Hiring Range $26.75–$30.89/hr; Full Range $26.75–$35.04/hr)
- Water Meter Maintenance Technician III (Hiring Range $30.91–$35.70/hr; Full Range $30.91–$40.49/hr)
Leon A Wurl Service Center (150 Bonnell Ave, Erie, CO 80516). 100% in‑person; not eligible for remote work.
Work HoursMonday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM. Employee must be able to work on‑call schedule and outside normal hours.
Duties and Responsibilities Essential- Assist, perform, and/or direct routine to complex maintenance and construction activities including meter sets, meter vaults, conductor and sidewalk, and curb stops.
- Operate heavy and light duty equipment (front‑end loader, dump truck, skid steer, backhoe, snow plow).
- Perform meter reading tasks – residential, raw water and commercial meters, change out meters, record activities, perform rereads, and service orders from Finance.
- Perform heavy labor, hand tools, light power equipment and heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
- Fabricate, install, maintain and use specialized programming and meter reading equipment; perform light mechanical repair.
- Conduct snow removal activities either by hand, small equipment or heavy equipment as assigned.
- Data entry of information, maintenance logs and other data.
- Respond and coordinate with customers and contractors for work orders, inquiries and complaints.
- Prepare necessary records and reports.
- Use and maintain Personal Protective Equipment.
- Perform routine safety checks of equipment and minor maintenance activities on vehicles and equipment.
- Maintain a safe working environment – traffic/congested areas, ditches, confined spaces, and all work environments.
- Assist in cleaning and organizing the shop area.
- Assist Streets in roadways and signage maintenance.
- Assist Distribution, Collections, Storm Operations tasks: sanitary sewer, manhole, lift stations, CCTV, water, sewer and storm lines, hydrants, valves, PRVs.
- Assist Locates with utility locates.
- Assist in Town event preparation, operation and breakdown.
High School diploma or GED required.
Experience- Technician I:
No experience required; 1 year of laboring, heavy maintenance, equipment operations or related experience preferred. - Technician II: 2 years related work experience in the utility field required.
- Technician III: 4 years related experience in the utility field required.
- Valid Driver’s License; satisfactory driving record required for all levels.
- Colorado Commercial Driver's License Class B required within one year (tanker endorsement for II and III).
- Flagger Certification within one year.
- Confined Space Certification within one year.
- Level I – I distribution certification from Colorado Operator Certification Program Office;
Level II – Level II distribution certification (II and III). - Stormwater (PACE) Certificate or equivalent.
- For II and III – an additional Certified Heavy Equipment Experience – Permit Required Confined Space certification.
