Job SummaryAs an HVAC & Plumbing Service Technician Apprentice, you will work under the supervision of experienced technicians and licensed plumbers to assist with the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing systems in residential and commercial settings. This entry-level position is designed to provide hands‑on experience and foundational training across both trades through real‑world service calls and preventative maintenance tasks.
You’ll support service calls, help troubleshoot HVAC and plumbing equipment, perform routine maintenance, document service activity, and deliver exceptional customer service.
Safety, reliability, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are essential, as you build a strong foundation for a career in the HVAC and plumbing service field and develop the skills needed to advance toward becoming a licensed service technician.
What You’ll Do- Service Support & Diagnostics: Assist lead technicians and licensed plumbers in performing HVAC and plumbing system diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs, ensuring all work aligns with manufacturer specifications and local codes. Support accurate issue identification during service calls to contribute toward a 90% first‑time fix rate, and respond promptly to emergency service calls under the supervision of senior technicians to gain hands‑on experience in high‑pressure repair scenarios.
- Preventative Maintenance & Documentation: Participate in scheduled maintenance on assigned systems to learn preventative techniques that enhance system performance and lifespan. Assist with accurate, complete service documentation of tasks performed, materials used, and customer interactions, and begin identifying potential value‑added services or system upgrades under the guidance of senior technicians.
- Customer Service & Communication: Support efforts to maintain a 90%+ customer satisfaction rating by demonstrating professionalism, courtesy, and clear communication during service visits. Assist in explaining procedures, system functionality, and maintenance needs to customers under supervision, and represent the company positively by arriving on time, prepared, and responding respectfully to client concerns.
- Tools, Equipment & Vehicle Care: Keep all tools, equipment, and company vehicles clean, organized, and in safe working condition to support job site readiness and reduce downtime. Report damaged or malfunctioning tools and equipment promptly, and assist in regular inspection and maintenance to extend tool life.
- Team Collaboration & Communication: Collaborate effectively with dispatchers, service managers, technicians, office staff, and fellow apprentices to support smooth service operations and job scheduling. Work closely with senior technicians and supervisors to learn procedures, receive feedback, and contribute to team productivity.
- Training & Development: Participate in all scheduled training sessions and pursue entry‑level HVAC and plumbing certifications to build technical knowledge and industry competence. Demonstrate a growing ability to complete tasks efficiently and accurately under supervision, and stay informed on new technologies, tools, and methods through continuous learning.
- On‑Call Availability: Participate in scheduled on‑call rotations, accompanying licensed technicians to gain real‑world experience in addressing urgent after‑hours service issues. Demonstrate promptness and professionalism when responding to emergency calls during time‑sensitive service.
- Cross‑Departmental Support: Support both the HVAC and plumbing service departments as needed, gaining exposure to system components and service practices across both trades. Perform cross‑functional duties under supervision to help meet overall company workload, demonstrating flexibility and teamwork across HVAC and plumbing operations.
