About the Role
Public Works–Water Utilities Technician positions support the maintenance and operation of Broomfield’s water distribution, wastewater collection, and recycled water systems. The Utilities Division team of 30 staff ensures residents have access to clean water and proper storm/sewer management.

- Assists with programs for Maintenance of Condition as related to the water distribution system, reuse distribution system and collections systems
- Responds to main breaks, backups, and repair of utilities systems
- Performs preventive maintenance and routine repairs on equipment.
- Assists in major maintenance and repairs to division equipment.
- Operates and maintains construction and maintenance equipment used in the department including pick‑up trucks, tractors, loaders, dump trucks, backhoe, jet truck, CCTV van, utility truck, snow blowers, gas analyzers, shovels, pick‑ax, sledge hammers, and hand tools.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
- Provides back‑up coverage in the operation of snowplows during inclement weather.
- Acts as troubleshooter to resolve problems within a particular area of assignment.
- Provides on‑the‑job instruction and orientation to lower‑level personnel as assigned.
- May train lower‑level personnel in the operation of and preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Advises the Foreman, Manager and applicable administrators of potential problems or concerns.
- Assumes lead role to support the Foreman in directing the work of programs for Maintenance of Condition as related to the water distribution system, reuse distribution system and collections systems
- Provides on‑the‑job instruction and orientation to lower‑level personnel as assigned. Recommends appropriate disciplinary action.
- May assume responsibility for work unit activities during the absence of the Foreman.
Education
- High School Diploma/GED – required
- Technician II:
Class 1 Sewer Collections Operator’s Certification from the state of Colorado – required - Technician III:
Class 2 Sewer Collections Operator’s Certification from the state of Colorado – required
- Technician II: 2 years in utility division repair and/or operations – required
- Technician III: 3 years in utility division repair and/or operations – required
- 2 years backhoe experience – preferred
- Some lead/supervisory experience – preferred
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
- New hires must pass pre‑offered and post‑offer background checks, including a DMV check, a local police check, a sex‑offender registry check, a pre‑placement physical and drug screen.
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License – required with 6 months of hire
- Technician II:
Class 2 Water Distribution or Sewer Collections certification (depending on assignment) – required within 2 years of hire - Technician III:
Class 3 Water Distribution or Sewer Collections certification (depending on assignment) – required within 2 years of hire
- Work is generally scheduled Monday‑Friday with some weekend and holiday work required.
- Position involves on‑call duty with rotating weekends and all‑hour requirements during emergency repairs.
- Attend meetings during evening hours as assigned.
- Required to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects (heavy lifting frequent).
- Physical demands involve exertion of 100+ lbs on occasion, 50+ lbs frequently, 20+ lbs constantly.
- Tasks may require standing, walking, crouching, climbing, and operating tools or machinery.
- May require computer work for several hours.
- Requires color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Travel by automobile needed to reach work sites and attend meetings.
- Perform work in extreme heat and cold, trenches, excavations, and exposures to offensive odor.
