Job Description

The Child Welfare Intern provides social casework support across various program areas such as child abuse and neglect, youth in conflict, and adult protection. The intern works alongside the Prevention Caseworker and other caseworkers to support families, increase protective factors, reduce risks of child abuse and neglect, and support reentry prevention.

  • Participates in regular child welfare meetings and supervision: weekly individual and group supervision, biweekly Social Work supervision.
  • Partners with the Child Welfare team to: determine which referrals meet assessment criteria, conduct intake assessments, work with families in permanency cases, attend court hearings, assess adult protection concerns, provide ongoing support for adult protection cases, engage in family meetings to make critical decisions.
  • Partners with the Prevention Caseworker on prevention programming: collaborate with community-based agencies, conduct home visits to assess individual and family needs, identify resources, provide information on available services, assist with 211 Pilot Program across counties.
Requirements

Minimum job requirements:

  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License with no restrictions and ability to drive a county vehicle.
  • Completion of Child Welfare Academy within the first semester.
  • Obtaining a BSW or MSW from an accredited institution.

Ability to:

  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Learn regulations, laws, procedures, and develop casework skills.
  • Accurately and effectively communicate written and orally.
  • Exercise independent judgment and critical thought.
  • Maintain courteous and effective relationships with the public, county departments, co-workers, and agencies.
  • Pass a background check, including traffic, criminal, and pre-employment drug screening.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain collaborative relationships with professionals and the community to develop treatment plans and solve client problems.

  • Use professional discretion to protect county from impropriety.

  • Social caseworker practice principles, theories, and concepts.

Mental/Physical Demands

Work performed in both office and field settings, including driving to visits. May encounter hostile or angry clients. Sedentary demands; occasional lifting of infants, small children, and case files. Requires sitting, talking, walking, using controls, reaching, standing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
