POSITION SUMMARY
The Association Historian is a subject matter expert, providing interpretation of the YMCA of the Rockies’ history. The historian leads and manages the institutional archives and collections, oversees the Lula W. Dorsey Museum, and provides collaborative leadership and day‑to‑day programming. The historian provides leadership and direction for the preservation and interpretation of historical sites, buildings, and archives at Estes Park Center, Snow Mountain Ranch, and Camp Chief Ouray.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
- Coordinates the efforts to preserve, promote, publicize and expand awareness of the museum and collections; familiar with current best practices in archival and museum theory.
- Serves as the subject matter expert; utilizes institutional archives to support programs in the museum and homestead that engage stakeholders in the organization’s history and related local, regional, national, and global history.
- Travels between Estes Park Center and Snow Mountain Ranch regularly each month to oversee both historical sites and programming.
- Participates in outreach activities, including conducting tours of the centers, guest engagement, and community engagement.
- Supervises staff and volunteers to ensure seamless facility and program operation; hires, trains, and evaluates staff and volunteers.
- Provides input and recommendations on the preservation and interpretation of historical documents and facilities.
- Develops and manages the annual operating budget and provides fiscal direction to collections, the museum, and the homestead.
- Must possess a U.S. driving license and be able to pass YMCA of the Rockies requirements for using Y‑vehicles on and off grounds.
- Minimum of 3 years of collection management experience in a museum or archive.
- Knowledge of standard museum and archival practices related to the museum’s collections and exhibits.
- Experience leading and coordinating programming.
- Proficiency in Museum and Archive Databases.
- Proficient with MS Office 365.
- Excellent communication skills – verbal and written.

- Meet acceptable criminal background check standards.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Able to lift and carry boxes up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to squat, reach, and climb ladders to access collections.
- Ability to climb stairs and frequently get up and down from the desk.
