Head Athletic Coach

Season start date: 2/24/2025
Season end date: 5/31/2025

Salary: $4,643 (Years 1-2), $5,572 (Years 3-5), $6,500 (Years 6-10), $7,429 (Years 11+)

Job Summary

The head coach is responsible for planning, directing, and leading an education-based athletic program that seeks to develop athletes of integrity.

Qualifications
  • Experience coaching in an education-based athletic program at the high school level.
  • Must meet the head coaching requirements of the Telluride School District (TSD) and the coaching requirements set forth by CHSAA (Colorado High School Activities Association) including CHSAA Coaching certifications and CPR/AED certification.
  • Playing and/or coaching experience preferred.
  • Submit fingerprints for a criminal background check.
  • Submit a completed TSD online application.

To accept the responsibility of the program and work with the students/athletes in the sport assigned and to provide life lessons that will positively impact the physical, social and emotional well‑being of all who are involved.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Accept and implement an educational-based athletic approach to Middle/High School athletics.
  • Follow the rules and regulations of the school, the conference and the CHSAA.
  • Complete all CHSAA Coaching requirements before the start of the first competition (HS only; MS must have CPR/First aid/AED certification).
  • The head coach is encouraged to maintain a membership in the appropriate coaches association and participate so that our school has representation.
  • Attend clinics, seminars, online classes and in‑service programs in order to improve coaching skills and to stay current with new trends in coaching, training, conditioning and safety procedures.
  • Coaches are expected to attend school and conference meetings, and are encouraged to attend state coaches meetings.
  • Give input about and then carry out the interscholastic schedule as drawn up by the Athletics Director.
  • Organize, schedule and supervise practice sessions to provide both individual and team development.
  • Supervise the use of equipment in your sport.
  • Assist the athletic assistant with the development of a written annual inventory and make recommendations for purchases to the Athletics Director.
  • Assist the athletic assistant with the distribution and collection of equipment and supplies.
  • Regularly inspect equipment and facilities to insure the safety of each student athlete.
  • Responsible for reporting scores and disseminating team information for publicity.
  • Participate in pre‑season and post‑season meetings with the Athletics Director. The post‑season meeting will serve as an evaluation conference.
  • Delegate responsibility to the assistant coaches as appropriate.
  • Work to develop continuity between the community and school programs.
  • Provide leadership in the program for all levels (9th, 10th, JV and Varsity) of the sport.
  • Only allow athletes cleared by the Athletic department to participate.
  • Maintain appropriate supervision of the program at all times (locker rooms, practices, events, bus rides, etc.). Supervise any and all space used by athletes while they are present. Secure all doors, windows, locks and check lights before leaving the building.
  • Assure that the team, at all times, will reflect proper attitude and conduct at home or away.
  • Establish and use a system of communication to athletes and parents that will include explanation of program policies, awards, procedures, goals and schedules.
  • Have responsibility for the end‑of‑season awards programs.
  • Represent the school in a professional manner in demeanor, language, and conduct (based on standards established by the Athletics Director).
  • Develop and maintain current knowledge of the activity being coached.
  • Has responsibility for school‑issued keys and will not give them to anyone. If lost, must report immediately to the Athletic Department.
  • Be prepared and get certified to drive a district vehicle, completing and submitting all forms and driving tests, including an SUV and Minibus.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Activities Director.
Evaluation

Performance of the job will be evaluated annually at the end of season.
