Physical Duties Description
A transportation paraprofessional assists with the physical and medical needs of students aboard their school bus. This may include loading and unloading students in wheelchairs via the hydraulic lift; moving and positioning wheelchairs within the bus; and/or securing the wheelchairs to the bus. It may also include positioning or repositioning students in their school bus seats and properly securing them in their safety restraint systems.
Other duties could include assisting students walking up and down the bus stairs, opening and closing bus windows and doors and cleaning the bus. Occasionally the paraprofessional may carry or move student backpacks or other equipment. If the transportation paraprofessional is unable to fulfill these duties, they can simply provide ride-along support and engage the bus driver for further assistance as needed.
Physical requirements (please check all that the employee may do with current medical restrictions):
- Loading and unloading students in wheelchairs via the hydraulic lift
- Moving and positioning wheelchairs within the bus
- Securing the wheelchairs to the bus
- Assisting students walking up and down the bus stairs
- Carrying or moving student backpacks or other equipment.
- Lifting awkwardly shaped objects weighing up to 35 pounds unassisted
- Properly shifting or moving (but not carry) students in their seats weighing up to 85 pounds
- Pushing and pulling a wheelchair over level but uneven surfaces
- Manipulating and operating door handles, latches, locks and securement straps and buckles
- Stooping, kneeling, bending, and reaching/adjusting objects located on the floor
- Reaching overhead with one or both arms to place light objects in overhead storage or to adjust bus windows
- Administering oral medications such as inhalers or pills when properly trained and certified
- Administering intravenous medications such as Epi Pens when properly trained and certified
- Performing light cleaning, including sweeping, mopping, wiping, and washing the school bus
Hourly RAte: $21.88 - $$27.11 / per year, depending on qualified experience
Days worked: 176 days/year (with paid personal time, paid vacation days, and paid time off for holidays and district non-work days such as during winter break and spring breaks)
